The Indicative tense

⚫ When one expresses what he or she wants to do the indicative tense is used.

⚫ This tense expresses: Facts/ certainty/ truths

The Subjunctive Mood

⚫ When someone wants to express his/ her desire that


someone else does something, the subjunctive mood is
used.

⚫ This mood expresses:

Wishes/Wants/Desires
Emotions
Recommendations
Doubts, etc

Structure of a Subjunctive Sentence

⚫ Two DIFFERENT subjects, one in first clause and


the other in second clause

⚫ QUE- the conjunction which separates the two


clauses.
⚫ Subject in first clause wants/ desires something
of subject in second clause

⚫ Let’s see if we can identify each part in the


examples on the next slide.

Subjunctive in Context
To set up the subjunctive there are three things that must be in the
sentence.

1. One of the setup words

2. The word “que”

3. Two different subjects
