WK 2 Discussion

Description of the Health Problem

The selected health problem is lung cancer. It has been documented to be the leading

cause of mortality among cancer patients accounting for about 1.8 million cases (Thandra et al.,

2021). Although diagnoses of other types of cancer have been indicated in young individuals,

lung cancer is mostly present in elderly members of society irrespective of gender. Nonetheless,

men have been indicated to be twice as likely to be diagnosed compared to women (Thandra et

al., 2021). Various risk factors for the development of the conditions include access plus usage

and level of industrialization. Other precipitating factors such as genetics and hormonal levels

have also been indicated (Thandra et al., 2021). The prevalence can be indicated to increase with

the increase in age. In the recent past, cases of lung cancer have increased compared to early

years before the 20th century (Chen et al., 2022). Noteworthy, individuals can be diagnosed with

cancer irrespective of their age, place, or gender.

Sampling Methods for Primary Data

Various approaches can be used to obtain primary data on the disease under discussion.

Sampling approaches that can be involved in the study include stratified, convenient, or quota. In

convenient sampling, the researcher can easily access individuals diagnosed with lung cancer. In

quota sampling, a given number of respondents from a given locality are chosen. On the other

hand, the stratified approach involves division depending on age or location and selecting

respondents from each section.

Secondary Data Sources and Influence of Methods plus Sources

According to Xu et al. (2020), cancer data can be obtained from the CDC website at state

or national levels. The second source would be the WHO website. Approaches such as

convenient sampling may be prone to bias. Besides, sample sizes may be inadequate due to

different limitations. Also, only suitable interview questions should be formulated. Such factors

may impact the completeness of the identified case. Besides, secondary sources may not denote

the actual cases in different regions thereby impacting case definition and completion.
