GENERAL ADVICE
1. For most parts you start with an adjustable ring („magic ring“ or „magic loop“) and you’ll go on work in a
continuous spiral (except the pattern calls for a slst to close the round). This means, you continue to crochet
directly into the first stitch of the previous round to start the next round.
2. You should mark the first stitch of a round to keep track of where the round begins. This helps when
counting your stitches to compare it with the pattern.
3. Take care to crochet very tight stitches! If you crochet rather loosely, choose a smaller hook size.
4. To get the right shape for your amigurumi, the most important thing is to stuff it very well. Stuff it as tight
as you can – I mean, really tight! When you think that’s enough, stuff it a bit more! A broken chopstick is the
perfect tool to help you to spread the soft stuffing into every little corner.
5. If the bug will be best friend to a child under the age of 3, please use safety eyes or embroider the eyes with
dark gray yarn. Make sure every part is tightly sewn on to securely attach all pieces to the body.
ch = chain stitch
dec = decrease (crochet together 2 sts with 1 sc)
dc = double crochet stitch
hdc = half double crochet stitch
inc = increase (2 sc into the same stitch)
FPdc = front post double crochet stitch (→ page 8)
rnd(s) = round(s)
sc = single crochet stitch
slst = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
tr = triple crochet stitch
…blo = work stitch as indicated through back loop only,
example: scblo, dec-blo
[…] ...x = repeat instructions in brackets as a sequence as
often as written after the closing bracket, example: [...] 5x
°…° = work the instructions between °...° all into same stitch or spot
(…) = total number of sts after row or rnd

Stuff the body some more, then break yarn and close the
remaining stitches (→ Tutorial C).
After rnd 14, pull the hat onto the head so that the back of the hat sits
at the base of the neck. Decide whether it fits properly (Remember 02
there’s still one round to go!). If it seems a little too short, crochet
one more straight round. If it fits, just go on with rnd 15.

FRONT POST DOUBLE CROCHET STITCH (FPdc)
Yarn over, insert the hook around the post of the indicated stitch - from the front to the back, around the post
and back to the front. Now the hook stands horizontally behind the post of the stitch (→ photos 01 + 02). Yarn
over, pull the yarn through ( 3 loops on the hook → photos 03 + 04). Yarn over and pull through the first two loops
on the hook ( 2 loops on the hook → photos 04 + 05). Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook to finish
the FPdc (→ photo 05 + 06). Skip the top of the stitch you’ve worked the FPdc around and crochet on in the next
stitch (→ photo 06).

loops of rnd 10 at the bottom of the candle.
Break the yarn with a very long rest and close the round into the
top of the beginning ch-3 (→ Tutorial C).
With the remaining yarn tail sew the candle and cream onto the
frosting. (For position see photos of the amigurumi.)
02
Using pale yellow for the flame and green for the leaves.
Work the following stitches into a magic loop:
Fasten the magic loop, break the yarn with a long rest and close the
round invisibly (→ Tutorial B, photo 03).
Pull the yarn ends so the flame sits onto the top of the candle
tightly. Knot the threads at the bottom of the candle, so they can’t
slip back inside. Cut the yarn above the knot.

BERRIES (make 3, or more)
Make a magic loop from blue, red or pink, or whatever you like the most,
ch 3 (counted as 1st dc), dc 12 into the loop (→ photo 01). (13)
Fasten the loop and break the yarn with a long rest. Pull the yarn end through the last stitch completely.
To form a sphere from the circle, thread a needle with the yarn tail and pull the yarn though every front loop
stitch by stitch (the same way you’d close remaining stitches on 3-dimensional pieces → Tutorial C, photo 02).
Pull the yarn end to form a sphere (→ photo 03). With the remaining yarn tail sew the berries onto the frosting.

CHEEKS With pink yarn, embroider little cheeks underneath your cupcake’s eyes.
SUGAR SPINKLES To make your little cupcake even sweeter, you can embroider colourful sugar sprinkles
onto the frosting (you can also use beads).
DIFFERENT CAKE TOPPINGS Let’s get the cupcake party started! Ella’s hat and cup are
interchangeable so why not making many more outfits with different cups and toppings to dress up your little
cupcake amigurumi.
