◦ A drug is anything other than food that when become consumed by the body, affects the functioning of the body and
brain.
◦ Drugs are taken into the body by:
◦ Eating
◦ Drinking
◦ Inhaling
◦ Injection

◦ Drugs may be:


◦ Useful
◦ Harmful
◦ illegal
USEFUL DRUGS
◦ Useful drugs are medicines.
◦ Medications may be:
◦ By prescription
Prescribed by a doctor or medical professional
◦ Behind the counter
Prescribed by a pharmacist
◦ Over the counter
Collected off the shelf
DRUG ABUSE
◦ Drug abuse is the continues misuse or excessive use of a drug/substance.
◦ Using illegal drugs is a form of drug abuse as well as misusing or
excessively using prescribed/legal drugs.
◦ Drug abuse may result in:
◦ Death
◦ Isolation
◦ Infections/diseases
◦ Damage to the brain or other organs
◦ Addiction

DEPRESSANTS
◦ Slow and relaxing drugs.
◦ Taken as pills and beverages
◦ An overdose may result in drowsiness, a coma or even death.
◦ Examples of depressants:
◦ Barbiturates: sleeping pills
◦ Alcohol
◦ Tranquilisers: sedatives
◦ Prozac: treat panic attacks and depression
STIMULANTS
◦ Drugs that cause increased activities.
◦ They improve one’s mood, well being and alertness.
◦ Stimulants are taken by sniffing and by injections.
◦ An overdose may result in stroke, heart attack and death.
◦ Examples of stimulants:
◦ Cocaine
◦ Ecstasy
NARCOTICS
◦ Narcotics are pain killers.
◦ These may be taken by sniffing, injection, smoking.
◦ An overdose may result in blood clots, damage to the brain and
other organs and death.
◦ Examples of narcotics are:
◦ Heroin
◦ Opium and other opiates
HALLUCINOGENS
◦ Hallucinogens reduce anxiety and causes hallucinations (seeing and
hearing things that are not there).
◦ They do so by altering one’s feelings and thoughts.
◦ Hallucinogens are usually eaten or smoked.
◦ An overdose may result in serious accidents and even death, and a
damaged lungs.
◦ Examples include:
◦ LSD
◦ Cannabis/marijuana
INHALANTS
◦ Inhalants are things inhaled or sniffed
continually to produce a relaxing
feeling or a state of being ‘high’.
◦ Inhalants are taken in by
sniffing/inhaling.
◦ Inhalants may result in death,
choking, suffocation, seizures and
coma.
◦ Examples include:
◦ Paints
◦ Glues
◦ Aerosols
