KINETIC ENERGY
• The form of energy a body possesses when in
motion.
• Examples:
– A boy running
– Helicopter flying
• The faster an object moves, the more kinetic
energy it has.
POTENTIAL ENERGY
• The energy possesses by an object
as a result of its position or
condition.
• Two common kinds:
– Gravitational potential energy
(GPE): energy possesses by
object based on position. E.g. an
object above ground level. At
ground level, GPE = 0
– Elastic potential energy: energy
possessed by an object based on
condition. E.g. a spring, a rubber
band, balloon with air
INCREASING OR DECREASING
GPE?
• Lifting your bag to the top of the table.
Increasing GPE of bag.

• Sliding down a water slide. Decreasing GPE

• Putting bag on ground. Zero GPE

LAW OF
CONSERVATION OF
ENERGY

• The law of conservation

of energy states that
energy can neither be
created nor destroyed. It
is converted from one
form to another.
