Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday


greeted newly elected BJP MLA Laxman Bag, who
defeated the former Chief Minister from Kantabanji seat in
the recently-concluded Odisha Assembly election.

Patnaik was walking through the House after taking his


oath as an Assembly member when he saw Bag. The BJP
MLA stood up from his seat to greet the senior leader.
"How are you?" Bag asked Patnaik with folded hands.
Responding to the first-time BJP MLA, Patnaik said, "Oh,
you defeated me".
Accompanied by Aul MLA and former Odisha minister
Pratap Keshari Deb, Patnaik congratulated Bag for his win
in the Assembly election.
The former Chief Minister was then greeted by his
successor Mohan Charan Majhi.
All other MLAs, including two Deputy Chief Ministers -- KV
Singh Deo and Pravati Parida -- rose from their seats to
greet Naveen Patnaik in the Assembly, where he had been
an undisputed leader for 24 years.
Bag defeated Naveen Patnaik by a margin of over 16,000
votes. In the Assembly election, Patnaik, 77, contested

from Kantabanji and his traditional seat of Hinjili in Ganjam


district.
While Patnaik lost the Kantabanji seat, he clung to victory
by a slender margin of 4,636 votes in Hinjili.
Notably, BJP's Bag amassed 90,876 votes against
Patnaik's 74,532, securing the Kantabanji seat by 16,334
votes.
In Odisha, BJP secured a majority by winning 78
Assembly seats, followed by BJD (51), Congress (14),
CPIM (1) and Independents (3). In the 147-member
Odisha Assembly, as many as 82 members are first-time
MLAs.
While Majhi is the leader of the House, Patnaik is
expected to be unanimously elected as the Leader of the
Opposition (LoP).
