"En minä sentään vielä ole niin tyyni väsynyt, ett'en jaksaisi tuota
sataa askelta käydä", vastaa Pekka, "mutta eihän tuosta sen vuoksi
mitään erinomaista kiirettäkään ole, eivät lapset kotona itke eikä
taida akkakaan vielä pahoin ikävöidä."
"Kas, täälläpä meidän akkakin on, kelpo akka, kun on tullut tänne
jo minua vastaan", laverteli Pekka pihaan päästyään.

"Jos niin on", sanoi Mikko, "niin onhan siellä tilaa meille
molemmillekin. Jos haluttaa, niin käydään yhdessä kartanon herran
puheille!"
Pekka oli iloinen ja laski leikkiä, kaikki kävi hänestä niin ihmeen
hyvästi ja keveästi; hän huusi ja lauloi, kolisteli kirveellään hongan
kylkeen, jutellen: "Nyt saat sinäkin, vanhus vähän kallistaa päätäsi;
siinä olet jo varmaankin Aatamin ajoista asti seisonut; sepäs on oikia
jättiläinen! Kuules, Mikko! tästä saamme vähällä vaivaa hyviä
sahtitynnyreitä, pohjat päihin vaan, niin on tynnyri valmis, tämä näet
on sisästä onttoa hotteloa!"
Halla oli vähin muuallakin tehnyt tuhojaan, mutta ei niin suuria kuin
Ruuhkajärven takana, sillä märät norot nostivat hallan kahta
ankarammaksi. Uutisasukkailla oli pula edessä, sillä edellisinä
vuosina olivat he kuluttaneet vanhat säästönsä, ja nyt, kun toivoivat
viljaa omistavansa, se toivo petti; rukiit olivat aivan jyvättömät ja
suvilaihon oraat tyyni turmeltuneet.
Tähän asti oli Pekka tehnyt työtä voimalla, jota ei olisi uskonut
löytyvän tuossa heikossa ruumiissa, mutta häntä elähytti oma
leikkisä, surematon luonteensa, sillä vaikka heidän leipänsä oli
tuskin puoliksi viljasta, söi Pekka aina hyvällä ruokahalulla ja laskien
leikkiä.
"Ei niin kauan hätää, kuin kuorta puussa piisaa", oli Pekalla tapana
sanoa. Multa nyt makasi hän taudin omana, tuskin voiden kättänsä
liikuttaa. Kova koetus oli käsissä.
