Topic: Many students around the world don’t choose the science subjects at university.

Give the
reasons for this and describe the impact on the community

By Dam Minh Tuan

I feel like I can say for certain that most students do not look at science as their first
option when it comes to choosing subjects at university. This can be boiled down to a
few factors which mainly comes down to the individuals which could lead to certain
impact on the community as a whole.

For what I know, I think that the current situation is due to the student preference.
While the young ambitious spirit of teens and young-adults stride for fulling and
future-proof jobs, both of which fits the bill for science, the development of many
new jobs and fields that fill those criteria has steered students away from choosing
science for university because as they see it, they do not need it to have a successful
career. Another aspect of it is that the standard to succeed down the path of science,
meaning the bar has been raised very high thanks to huge innovations around the
world in fields like material science and now recently artificial intelligence. This in
turn has created a somewhat intimidating environment for fresh-face juniors, deterring
them from pursuing science as major and overall reducing the amount of people
choosing scientific subjects at university. With this pressure along with the fact that
the majority of Gen Z has such short attention span has painted a vile and sad picture
of the dwindling supple of scientists in the world inevitable going down in both
quality and quantity.

This comes with a plethora of consequences for the science community and for
society as a whole. The most damming of which is the inevitable lack of young
workforce in the field, which are important to bring creativity and innovation to the
table. As technological and science development do not go in a linear path but rather a
stair pattern with period of stagnant and breakthroughs, the reduction in young
ambitious scientist can prolong the stagnant period leading to economical decline as
innovations becomes more commercial and less radical. This could also impact the
university as they see less and less students partake in their dedicated course and
impact their ranking internationally and globally.

To sum up, the reduction for students’ choice in science for university can have
massive impact on the science community and the world in gereral. Though it could
have little to no impact on society as a whole
