IL exam – tips for success

 Read the assessment pack and marking scheme very carefully. You can
succeed better if you know what counts as successful performance.

 Read the “possible questions” in the assessment pack.

 Be specific! (In your monologue and in the Q & A)

 Prepare!

 Start with the area of language/skill rather than with the resources you
used.
o “I used three worksheets and two websites to practise grammar.” 
o “I spent half of my time on grammar. To study articles, I used three
worksheets and two websites.”

 There’s no need to start your monologue with “In my independent

learning, I…” (We know you’re talking about independent learning!)

 When preparing your two-minute monologue, try to imagine what a

listener might ask, and include the answers in your monologue

 Don’t say “we can…” Focus on:

o “I did…”
o “I felt…”
o “I thought…”
o “I decided…”
o “I realized…”
o “I experienced…”

 Listen carefully to the questions in the Q & A. Answer what you were
asked. You can ask for a question to be repeated, if necessary.

 Remember that honest discussion of what wasn’t positive in your

independent learning process is absolutely fine.

 Don’t say “boring” – that’s a boring thing to say. Don’t say “interesting” –
it’s not an interesting thing to say. (Unless you follow one of these words
with “because…”)
