EEE 101: ELECTRONICS 1 (3 0 3)

A. OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the course are to introduce student to the basic physics and application of the
diodes, and transistors. It also serves on introduction to the various types of amplifies, switching
devices and power supplied.
B. COURSE CONTENT
1.Basic Semiconductor and PN Junction Theory
Introduction, Atomic Theory; conduction in solids; Conductors, Semiconductors and Insulators’-
type and p-n Junction: Biased Junctions.
2.Semi-Conductors Diodes
Introduction’s-n Junction Diode Characteristics and parameters: Diode Approximations: DC
Load Line Analysis; Temperature Effects: AC Equivalent Circuit: Zener Diodes.
3. Diode Application
Introduction: half wave Rectification: full wave Rectification: half wave rectifier DC Power
supply; full wave rectifier DC power supply: filters circuits; power supply performance: Zener
Diode Voltage Regulators; series clipping circuits; shunt clipping circuits: clamping circuits: DC
Voltage multipliers, voltage regulations
4. Bipolar Junction Transistors
Transistors operation: transistors voltages and current: Amplification: common base
characteristics; common emitter and common collector characteristics
5. BJT Biasing
DC Load line and bias point base bias: collector to base bias Voltage Divider bias: comparison of
basic bias circuits: Design; Thermal stability of bias circuits (Qualitative Discursions Only)
6. Field Effect Transistors
Ideal voltage controlled current source, junction field effect transistor and its VI characteristics
and its construction. The JFET transfer characteristics. MOSFET: Enhancement and depletion
type, brief idea about construction of MOSFETs.MOS V-I characteristics. DC analysis of
FETs/MOSFET as a resistance, FET as a switch as an amplifier, small signal FET modes. CMOS
devices.
