Poinsettia
Euphorbia Pulcherrima, also known as Poinsettias
are widely used as Christmas flower decors. It is a
native to Mexico and is more popularly known for it's
red and green foliage. However, the colored bracts
which are most often flaming red but can be orange,
pale green, cream, pink, white, or marbled, are often
mistaken for flower petals because of their groupings
and colors. Interestingly, they are actually leaves.

According to Wiki, the colors of the bracts are created

through photoperiodism, meaning that they require
darkness for at least 5 days in order to change color.
At the same time, the plants require abundant light
during the day for the brightest color.

Its name is derived from Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first

United States Minister to Mexico who introduced the
plant to the US in 1825.

Create Chalk Dust

When applying chalk to my flowers, I use a metal strainer

to transform the chalk into a powder. I pretty much rub
the chalk onto the wire strainer over a piece of writing
paper, and then pour the chalk into a small container for
later use.

What I would do next is take a paint brush, and brush the

powdered chalk (a little at a time) onto the areas that I
want to add a pop of color. I would do this over a piece of
writing paper as well... just in case the excess is enough
to go right back into the container. No time for wasting!

I highly recommend doing this outside or next to an

open window for good ventilation.

Coloring The Cyathium & Bracts
Here's the fun part!!!

Step 1 Add red chalk dust to the bottom half of each of

the cyathium.

Step 2 Dust over the center area of the bracts lightly

with white dust, and then with light pink dust. Make
between 4 and 5 random stripes using a striper brush
and white paint. Follow the

Xsmall bracts Color 3 and leave 1 red

Small bracts Color only 4 and leave 1 red
Medium bracts Color 4 bracts and leave 3 red
