1. Introduction
Radar Type 1009 is an I Band HDWS system designed for navigation, blind pilotage,
surface surveillance and range clearance. This section will cover the following:
a. Uses.

5. Transmitter/Receiver Cabinet
The Transmitter/receiver and monitoring Unit contains a pulsed controlled modulator
driving an India Band magnetron which feeds RF pulses to the Aerial via the waveguide.
Located at the top of the cabinet are the function switches. These are:
c. Tx Control Switch.
d. Off/On Switch.
e. Standby/Run Switch.
7. Displays
a. The Navigation and Tactical Display (NTD). The Display and Control Interface Unit
provides the operator interface to the NTD. The main display comprises a 399.5 x 319.5
mm colour flat screen and the Main ON/OFF switch. The Control Interface Unit comprises
of a touch screen together with a tracker ball and three associated push buttons. The
touch screen is used to select the various menus. The Tracker Ball is a multi function
control which is used to position the cursor. The three buttons allow for tracker ball
functions to be selected.
b. The Portable Auxiliary Display (PAD). A Portable Auxiliary Display can be used
instead of the Main Display and Control Interface Unit, where the operator needs to work
from different positions. The display can be moved between locations provided suitable
interface connections are provided at each location.
Note. The PAD display has limited operator control compared to the standard Main
Display and Control Interface Unit.
d. ASTUTE Class submarines are fitted with two PAD’s. One is fixed within the
Command Deck, the other stowed in the RESM Office for use on the bridge.
8. Processor Unit
The Processor Unit has no operator controls. However, it contains the floppy disk and
CDROM drives. These are used for various applications, for example the installation of new
programmes, or for installing chart data.
9. Control Words
After the initial report and during the tracking process the OOW will allocate specific
Control Words to each track. The function of these words are to notify the Operators of what
are the OOW intentions for future reports on all contacts held. The Control Words and their
meaning are as follows:
