Impersonal Use of

Passive Voice

WARNING: EXTREMELY PRO LESSON

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE

TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT...

Active voice means that a sentence has a subject that acts upon its verb.

Passive voice means that the subject is a patient of a the action of the verb,
that is to say, it suffers the action.
PASSIVE VOICE—
WHY IS IT USED?
When we want to give importance to the person or thing that
suffers the action and we want to give less importance to the
performer of the action. But, why would you do it? Because...
THE PERSON / THING PERFORMING THE ACTION IS OBVIOUS
THE SPEAKER DOES NOT KNOW WHO/WHAT PERFORMS THE ACTION
THE SPEAKER DOES NOT WANT TO SAY WHO/WHAT PERFORMS THE ACTION
(because it is not relevant, or you want to hide it on purpose, for example)
PASSIVE VOICE—--------IMPERSONAL USE (I)
