Vroom-Yetton Decision Making Model
__________________________________________________

The Vroom-Yetton model shown in Figure 14.1 (page 537) in your text provides leaders
with a system to help determine how a decision should be made. This exercise will provide you
with the opportunity to use the Vroom-Yetton Model.
Each of these situations requires that a decision be made. Using the chart in Figure 14.1,
determine which of the five strategies—Autocratic I, Autocratic II, Consultative I, Consultative II,
Group I—the leader should use to make the decision.

Situation A
Jonathon Hancock has been asked to set production goals for his welders and then to return
a signed copy of these goals to the plant manager. Mr. Hancock has been a supervisor for 10 years.
He always dreads setting goals and does not think they are useful. What strategy should he use?

____ Autocratic I
____ Autocratic II
____ Consultative I
____ Consultative II
____ Group I

Group I

Why did you choose this strategy?

For me I will give an advice to used Consultative II as his Strategy, it usually refers to a
situation in which a leader continues to solicit input and ideas from others, but ultimately makes
all of the decisions. Given that Mr. Hancock does not believe that goal-setting is helpful, he must
employ Consultative II. According to the description, Consultative II is when the leader gathers
his followers to evaluate the issues and seek feedback collectively before coming to a conclusion
alone. I decided on this tactic because, as a responsible boss, he need to pay attention to his staff,
who are the ones facing the difficulties directly.
It's usually a good idea to get multiple points of view when creating a strategy, and often
the best ideas come from those closest to us. Additionally, by using consultative type II, employees
would feel just as important as the management are considering their opinions, and the

management appreciates their contribution to the work. It will motivate the staff to put in a lot of
effort and give their jobs their all.

Situation B
Krista Harrison is the branch manager for a small bank and must schedule vacations for
her 10 employees. The regional manager wants the vacation list in the next week. What strategy
should she use?

____ Autocratic I
____ Autocratic II
____ Consultative I
____ Consultative II
____ Group I

Why did you choose this strategy?

I chose the strategy so Krista Harrison can inform the worker about what's happening. As a
manager, she needs to know if her employee can take the vacation they requested. She should talk to them
about it and then decide. But they might not have time to talk before the final vacation list is out. It's a good
idea because after workers decide, we'll have a good list of vacation days. Asking the employee before
deciding shows that Krista cares about their opinion and will consider how their choices affect things.
