Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
After knowing what is critical reading, the learners will be able to:
Reading is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them

Q: Do all of you read? Do all of you like to read every day? Do any of you here read as a hobby?
Q: When you are reading, do you understand what you read? What in particular do you look for in
a written material (e.g. books, article, etc..) when you read?
Unlocking Question: Why do you think it is important to dig deeper into reading a text by thinking
about its meaning and significance?
- Comprehension
Example: Your ex-friend posted on Facebook a long essay regarding friendship and betrayal a day
after your separation. What catches your attention is the emphasis on betrayal and the subtle
blame on someone.
Would you just scroll pass through it or try to get the deeper meaning of that ex-friend’s
message?
(Ask students to give and share five personal traits, which they think a critical reader should
embody.)

own reading of it. A critical reading also tells the reader what the text does and what it means. In

Define reasoning
(To read critically is to exercise your judgment about what you are reading . It is
engaging in what you read by asking yourself questions such as, “what is an author trying to
say?” or ‘ what is the main argument being presented?” This essential skill in reading leads to the
development of critical thinking by reasoning and vice-versa. To become a critical reader, it is
important to know some tips / techniques of becoming a critical thinker.)
