10. The selling price of each copy of a monthly magazine is $x. The total profit on the sale of the
magazine is $y. It is given that y partly varies directly as x and partly varies directly as the
square of x. When x = 32, y = 76 800. When x = 54, y = 70 200.
(a) Express y in terms of x. (3 marks)
(b) The owner of the magazine originally planned to sell a copy of the magazine at $45. In
view of the pandemic, he decides to lower the selling price of each copy of the
magazine to boost circulation. Is it possible that he still makes the same total profit?

12. There are 35 clerks in a company. The box-and-whisker diagram below shows the distribution
of the ages of the clerks in the company. It is given that the range of this distribution is the
double of its inter-quartile range.
