(a) 6 x 2 − 17 xy + 5 y 2 ,
(b) 6 y − 18x − 6 x 2 + 17 xy − 5 y 2 .
(3 marks)

5. Amy has twice as many surgical masks as Ben. If Amy gives 25 of her surgical masks to Ben,
then the number of surgical masks owned by Ben is 3 times that owned by Amy. Find the total
number of surgical masks owned by Amy and Ben. (4 marks)

7. (a) Solve x 4 − x 2 − 6 = 0.
(b) Using the result of (a), solve 16 y = 4 y + 6 .

10. The selling price of each copy of a monthly magazine is $x. The total profit on the sale of the
magazine is $y. It is given that y partly varies directly as x and partly varies directly as the
square of x. When x = 32, y = 76 800. When x = 54, y = 70 200.
(a) Express y in terms of x. (3 marks)
(b) The owner of the magazine originally planned to sell a copy of the magazine at $45. In
view of the pandemic, he decides to lower the selling price of each copy of the
magazine to boost circulation. Is it possible that he still makes the same total profit?

(b) Figure 2 shows a container. The lower part of the container is a cylinder of height
4.5 cm. The upper part has the same shape as the frustum shown in Figure 1 where
h = 4.5. The base radius of the lower cylinder is the same as the lower base radius of the
frustum.

12. There are 35 clerks in a company. The box-and-whisker diagram below shows the distribution
of the ages of the clerks in the company. It is given that the range of this distribution is the
double of its inter-quartile range.

13. The stem-and-leaf diagram below shows the distribution of the weights (in grams) of the
letters in a bag.
It is given that the inter-quartile range of the above distribution is 34 grams and the mean of
the distribution exceeds 30 grams.
(a) Find the values of a and b. (4 marks)
(b) If four letters are removed from the bag, find the least possible range of the distribution
of the weights of the remaining letters in the bag. (2 marks)

14. In the figure, ABCD is a circle. AC and BD intersect at E such that ED = EC. DA produced
meets CB produced at F.
16. A researcher investigated a certain species of frogs for a year. The population of the frogs (y)
after x months can be estimated by y = k (10)a x .
(a) Express log y in terms of a, k and x. (2 marks)
(b) It is given that the graph of log y against x for the linear relation in (a) passes through
(0, 3.2) and (10, 2.2). Find the values of a and k. (3 marks)

17. A password should contain eight characters. Suppose the password is randomly formed by a
permutation of p, q, r, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
(a) How many different passwords can be formed? (2 marks)
(b) Find the probability that the first character is a letter and the last character is a number.

18. The figure below shows a circle C passing through the origin with the equation
x 2 + y 2 − 8x + 6 y = 0 . C cuts the x-axis and the y-axis at points A and B respectively.

19. In Figure 3, ABCD is a paper card which is in the shape of a kite. The diagonals AC and BD
intersect at E. It is given that AB = AD = 20 cm, CB = CD = 13 cm and AC = 21 cm.
