I. Danh từ đếm được – Countable nouns

Trong ngữ pháp tiếng Anh, danh từ đếm được – countable nouns là những danh

từ chỉ những thứ chúng ta có thể đếm được bằng cách sử dụng số. Chúng có

dạng số ít và dạng số nhiều, với dạng số ít, ngoài việc dùng số đếm thì ta có thể

sử dụng mạo từ “a” hoặc “an”.

E.g.: an apple (một quả táo), a dog (một con chó), one mouse (một con chuột),

three cats (ba con mèo), four books (bốn quyển sách), etc.

Quy tắc chuyển danh từ đếm được từ số ít sang số nhiều

Số ít (singular) → số nhiều (plural) Ví dụ

Kết thúc bằng ‑s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -o hay glass → glasses
-z → thêm -es vào cuối potato → potatoes
Kết thúc bằng -f, -fe, -ff → bỏ đi rồi thêm wife → wives
-ves vào cuối knife → knives

Kết thúc bằng phụ âm + -y → chuyển -y family → families

thành -i rồi thêm -es vào cuối city → cities

Kết thúc bằng nguyên âm + -y → thêm -s boy → boys

vào cuối ray → rays

Kết thúc bằng ‑us → chuyển -us thành -i cactus → cacti

Kết thúc bằng ‑is → chuyển -is thành -es analysis → analyses

Kết thúc bằng ‑on → chuyển -on thành -a phenomenon → phenomena

Các trường hợp thông thường → thêm -s dog → dogs

vào cuối danh từ cake → cakes

Một số danh từ không thay đổi khi chuyển sheep → sheep

từ số ít sang số nhiều series → series
species → species

Một số danh từ đếm được bất quy tắc

Danh từ bất quy tắc không tuân theo quy tắc cụ thể nào, vì vậy tốt nhất bạn
nên học thuộc những danh từ này hoặc tra cứu từ điển khi cần. Dưới đây là
một số danh từ đếm được bất quy tắc phổ biến.
 man → men woman → women child → children goose → geese tooth →
teeth foot → feet mouse → mice person → people

Khi hỏi về số lượng của một danh từ đếm được, bạn sẽ dùng cấu trúc:

How many + countable nouns

E.g.: How many friends do you have? (Cậu có bao nhiêu người bạn?)

II. Danh từ không đếm được – uncountable nouns

Trong tiếng Anh, danh từ không đếm được – uncountable nouns là những danh

từ chỉ những thứ chúng ta không thể đếm được bằng cách sử dụng số. Chúng

chỉ có dạng số ít.

E.g.: tea (trà), sugar (đường), water (nước), air (không khí), etc.

Những danh từ không đếm được thường được chia làm 6 nhóm như sau:

● Danh từ chỉ đồ ăn hoặc chất: food (đồ ăn), meat (thịt), rice (gạo), water
(nước), cement (xi-măng), gold (vàng), etc.
 ● Danh từ chỉ lĩnh vực, môn học: mathematics (môn toán), history (lịch
sử), English (tiếng Anh), etc.
● Danh từ chỉ các nhóm hoặc bộ sưu tập đồ đạc: furniture (đồ nội thất),
equipment (thiết bị), rubbish (rác), luggage (hành lý), etc.
● Danh từ chỉ ý tưởng hoặc khái niệm trừu tượng: progress (quá trình), fun
(niềm vui), information (thông tin), knowledge (kiến thức), etc.
● Danh từ chỉ hoạt động: walking (đi bộ), reading (đọc), cooking (nấu ăn),
etc.
● Danh từ chỉ hiện tượng tự nhiên: weather (thời tiết), snow (tuyết), wind
(gió), etc.
E.g.: We’re going to get new furniture for the living room. (Chúng tôi sẽ mua

đồ nội thất mới cho phòng khách.)

KHÔNG VIẾT LÀ We’re going to get a new furniture for the living room. hay

We’re going to get new furnitures for the living room.

Khi hỏi về số lượng của một danh từ không đếm được, bạn sẽ dùng cấu trúc:

How much + uncountable nouns

E.g.: How much sugar do you need in your tea? (Bạn cần bao nhiêu đường

trong trà của bạn?)

III. Phân biệt countable và uncountable nouns

Các quy tắc căn bản

Đi cùng lượng từ
Lượng từ – quantifiers là các từ chỉ số lượng của cái gì đó trong tiếng Anh.

Một số từ chỉ số lượng chỉ trong tiếng anh đi với danh từ đếm được, số khác lại

đi với danh từ không đếm được, và một số lại có thể đi với cả danh từ đếm

được và không đếm được.
