against Washington during that stretch.
- In the 21 games that Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin have gone head-to-head during their careers the Penguins own a 12-
7-2 record. Crosby (13G-22A) has outscored Ovechkin (15G-13A) in those contests, 35-28.
- Pittsburgh killed off a pair of 5-on-3 NY Rangers power plays on Tuesday night, improving the Penguins’ numbers to a perfect 5-for-5
in such situations for the season.
- D Deryk Engelland and D Paul Martin both enter tonight with three-game assist streaks. Engelland has four assists and a plus-3
rating in his last five games while Martin has five assists and a plus-2 rating over his last seven contests.
PENGUINS-CAPITALS CONNECTIONS
Pittsburgh –G Brent Johnson was a Capital for three seasons from 2005-08. In 75 games with Washington, Johnson posted a 22-35-
10 record. F Matt Cooke spent the last part of the 2007-08 season with Washington. Cooke tallied seven points (3G-4A) and a plus-5
rating in 17 regular-season games and was scoreless in seven playoff appearances.
Washington –Assistant coach Jim Johnson, who was hired by Washington on Tuesday, played for Pittsburgh from 1985-90 before
being traded to the Minnesota North Stars in a deal that brought future Hall of Famer Larry Murphy and Peter Taglianetti to the
Penguins. Johnson played in 390 career regular-season contests with Pittsburgh, collecting 109 points (14G-95A). He added five
assists in 11 postseason contests.
TEAM NOTES:
ON A ROLL
Crosby’s 11 points since his return on Nov. 21 are the most in the NHL during that span. He is followed closely by Evgeni Malkin, who
ranks second with nine points (4G-5A), and Pascal Dupuis, who places fourth (tied) with six points (3G-3A).
INCREDIBLE MALK
Evgeni Malkin enters tonight’s game riding a season-high five-game point streak (4G-5A). During his streak Malkin has recorded two
points in four of the five games.
Since Oct. 27, Malkin has accumulated 19 points (8G-11) over his previous 14 games, tied for the second-most points during that span
behind Toronto’s Joffrey Lupul (20 points). Malkin has recorded points in 11 of the 14 games, including seven multiple-point contests.
Malkin, whose 1.28 point per game average (minimum 10 games) ranks second in the NHL (Phil Kessel, Toronto, 1.29), leads the
Penguins this season in multiple-point games (8), power-play points (10, tied) and game-winning goals (3).
TOP SNIPER
James Neal is tied with Ottawa’s Milan Michalek for third among NHL goal scorers with 14, trailing league-leader Phil Kessel of the
Toronto Maple Leafs by two goals. Pittsburgh’s leading scorer with 25 points, Neal is on pace to establish career highs across the
board offensively. His two-point night (1G-1A) against the NY Rangers on Tuesday moved him into a tie for ninth place in the NHL
scoring race.
Neal, who has collected points in 19 of Pittsburgh’s 25 games, leads the league in both power-play goals (7) and shots (104).
SUPER DUPER
Pascal Dupuis has goals in three straight games coming into tonight. That ties his longest goal-scoring streak since a three game
streak from Feb. 7-12, 2006 (4 goals total). With a goal tonight, Dupuis will equal the longest goal-scoring streak of his career (4
games; Nov. 20-25, 2006; 4 goals).
Dupuis has picked up points in eight of his last 11 games, collecting a total of 11 points (4G-7A) during that stretch. Dupuis ranks third
on the team with 20 points and leads the club with a plus-12 rating.
AMPED UP
Pittsburgh’s power play has been on a bit of a hot streak over the past five games. The Penguins have scored a power-play goal in four
of the last five games, going 4-for-19 (21.1%) during that stretch. Through the first 25 games of the season the Penguins have yet to go
more than two consecutive games without a man-advantage tally. Pittsburgh’s record this season when it scores at least one power-
play goal is 10-2-3. When the Penguins score two power-play goals in a single game they are 4-1.
James Neal, who scored on the man-advantage against the NY Rangers on Tuesday, leads the NHL with seven power-play goals.
Neal (7G-3A), Evgeni Malkin (3G-7A) and Kris Letang (1G-9A) are all tied for the team lead with 10 power-play points.
