Introduction – dẫn đề
achieve unprecedented successes in the construction of imposing infrastructure for public
use.
Some surviving structures are almost complete,
such as the town walls of Lugo in Hispania Tarraconensis, now northern Spain.
achievements include rebuilding the Pantheon in its current form and leaving his mark on
the landscape of northern Britain with Hadrian's Wall.

amphitheatres, aqueducts, baths, bridges, circuses, dams, domes, harbours, temples,

panels of marble or other coloured stones called revetment (lớp hồ tô,
Quy hoạch đô thị La Mã cổ đại ▪ Castra – Các đô thị La Mã khởi đầu as military garrisons,
▪ Mặt bằng quy hoạch đô thị là a rectangle or square, with
two main roads, Cardo và Decumanus cắt nhau vuông gốc

▪ Some of the most impressive secular (thế
tục) buildings are the amphitheatres, over
200 being known and many of which are well
preserved, such as that at Arles,
the Colosseum in Rome.

As early as the time
of Augustus, a public basilica for transacting business had been part of any settlement that
considered itself a city, used in the same way as the late medieval covered market houses of
northern Europe, where the meeting room, for lack of urban space, was set above the
arcades, however.
▪ Although their form was variable, basilicas often contained interior colonnades that divided
the space, giving aisles or arcaded spaces on one or both sides, with an apse at one end (or
less often at each end), where the magistrates sat, often on a slightly raised dais (bệ).
▪ The central aisle tended to be wide and was higher than the flanking aisles, so that light
could penetrate through the clerestory windows.
▪ The oldest known basilica, the Basilica Porcia, was built in Rome in 184 BC by Cato the
Elder during the time he was Censor. Other early examples include the basilica at Pompeii
(late 2nd century BC). After Christianity became the official religion, the basilica shape was
found appropriate for the first large public churches, with the attraction (sự hấp dẫn) of
avoiding reminiscences (hồi tưởng) of the Greco-Roman temple form.

Forum

xây dựng trên bệ cao 2.85 m, the temple dominated the forum of the
Roman city, forming a rectangle almost twice as long as it is wide,
measuring 26.42 m by 13.54 m.

▪ Nằm trên cột, architrave được chia bởi hai hàng of petrified water
drips thành ba cấp với tỷ lệ 1:2:3. Egg-and-dart decoration divides the
architrave from the frieze. On three sides the frieze is decorated with
fine ornamental relief carvings of rosettes and acanthus leaves beneath
a row of very fine dentils.
▪ Một cửa vào lớn (cao 6.87 m, rộng 3.27 m) leads to the surprisingly
small and windowless interior, where the shrine was originally housed.
This is now used to house a tourist oriented film on the Roman history
of Nîmes. No ancient decoration remains inside the cella.
Temple Exterior
▪ Ngoại thất temple was constructed using the Italian white Luna marble
from Cararra.
▪ Sàn nhà: mixture of coloured marble - yellow Numidian, purple Phrygian
and Lucullun red and black.
▪ Nội thất cella hai bên có cột probably also in purple marble, and in
the wall behind these there were purple Phrygian pilasters on either side of
niches which contained statues.
▪ Column capitals and those of the pilasters were especially
interesting as, instead of the usual volutes, they had
representations of Pegasus who was thought to carry the
thunderbolts of Zeus, the god’s traditional weapons.
▪ The interior ceiling was composed of coffered slabs embellished with gilded
rosettes.
Statue of Mars
cand surrounded by the legionary standards which the Parthians
had taken but which, following Roman victory, were recaptured and
restored to Rome. The torso (thân) of this statue may well be the
one now in the Capitoline Museums of Rome with the head, arms
and legs having been restored.
Later Additions & Re-Use (xem thêm)
Behind the temple stands a 30 m high tufa wall which is topped with
white travertine. It was constructed to separate the Forum from the hill
residences behind it and to act as a firewall should a fire start in this
densely-populated area of the city. In the 1st century CE Tiberius
added two arches to the temple sides in honour of his two sons Drusus
the Younger and Germanicus but these have now been lost except for
the foundations of one. In the 2nd century CE Hadrian repaired parts of
the building but from the 5th century CE the building went into decline
and blocks began to be re-used in other building projects. From the
12th century CE soil was added to the site and the area used
for agriculture, however, as the drains were then blocked, a marsh
formed until the area was drained in the 16th century CE.
Theatres
▪ Roman theatres were built in all areas of the empire from
Spain, to the Middle East. Because of the Romans' ability to
influence local architecture, we see numerous theatres around
the world with uniquely Roman attributes.
▪ The scaenae frons was a high back wall of the stage floor,
supported by columns. The proscaenium was a wall that
supported the front edge of the stage with ornately decorated
niches off to the sides.
▪ The Hellenistic influence is seen through the use of
the proscaenium. The Roman theatre also had a podium,
which sometimes supported the columns of the scaenae
frons. The scaenae was originally not part of the building itself,
constructed only to provide sufficient background for
the actors.
▪ Eventually, it became a part of the edifice itself, made out of Roman Theatre (Mérida), Spain
concrete. The theatre itself was divided into the stage
(orchestra) and the seating section (auditorium). Vomitoria or
entrances and exits were made available to the audience.

ANCIENT ROMAN ARCHITECTURE ORIGINAL
Roman theatre
▪ There exist similarities between the theatres and amphitheatres of ancient Rome/Italy. They
were constructed out of the same material, Roman concrete, and provided a place for the
public to go and see numerous events throughout the Empire. However, they are two entirely
different structures, with specific layouts that lend to the different events they held.
Amphitheatres did not need superior acoustics, unlike those provided by the structure of a
Roman theatre. While amphitheatres would feature races and gladiatorial events, theatres
hosted events such as plays, pantomimes, choral events, orations, and commerce.[2] Their
design, with its semicircular form, enhances the natural acoustics, unlike Roman
amphitheatres constructed in the round.
▪ These buildings were semi-circular and possessed certain inherent architectural structures,
with minor differences depending on the region in which they were constructed. The scaenae
frons was a high back wall of the stage floor, supported by columns. The proscaenium was a
wall that supported the front edge of the stage with ornately decorated niches off to the sides.
The Hellenistic influence is seen through the use of the proscaenium. The Roman theatre
also had a podium, which sometimes supported the columns of the scaenae frons. The
theatre itself was divided into the stage (orchestra) and the seating section
(auditorium). Vomitoriaor entrances and exits were made available to the audience.
Roman theatre
▪ The auditorium, the area in which people gathered, was sometimes constructed on a small hill
or slope in which stacked seating could be easily made in the tradition of the Greek Theatres.
The center of the auditorium was hollowed out of a hill or slope, while the outer radian seats
required structural support and solid retaining walls. This was not always the case as Romans
tended to build their theatres regardless of the availability of hillsides. All theatres built within
the city of Rome were completely man-made without the use of earthworks. The auditorium
was not roofed; rather, awnings (vela) could be pulled overhead to provide shelter from rain or
sunlight.
▪ Some Roman theatres, constructed of wood, were torn down after the festival for which they
were erected concluded. This practice was due to a moratorium on permanent theatre
structures that lasted until 55 BC when the Theatre of Pompey was built with the addition of a
temple to avoid the law. Some Roman theatres show signs of never having been completed in
the first place.
▪ Inside Rome, few theatres have survived the centuries following their construction, providing little
evidence about the specific theatres. The Roman theatre of Orange in modern Orange, France,
is a good example of a classic Roman theatre, with an indented scaenae frons, reminiscent of
Western Roman theatre designs, however stripped of its ornamental stone columns, statues and
Villa
▪ A Roman villa was a country house built for the upper class, while a domus was a wealthy
family's house in a town. The Empire contained many kinds of villas, not all of them lavishly
appointed with mosaic floors and frescoes. In the provinces, any country house with some
decorative features in the Roman style may be called a "villa" by modern scholars.
▪ Some were pleasure palaces such as those— like Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli— that were situated
in the cool hills within easy reach of Rome or— like the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum— on
picturesque sites overlooking the Bay of Naples.
▪ Some villas were more like the country houses of England or Poland, the visible seat of power
of a local magnate, such as the famous palace rediscovered at Fishbourne in Sussex.
▪ Suburban villas on the edge of cities were also known, such as the Middle and Late Republican
villas that encroached on the Campus Martius, at that time on the edge of Rome, and which can
be also seen outside the city walls of Pompeii, including the Villa of the Mysteries, famous for its
frescos.
▪ These early suburban villas, such as the one at Rome's Auditorium site or at Grottarossa in
Rome, demonstrate the antiquity and heritage of the villa suburbana in Central Italy. It is
possible that these early, suburban villas were also in fact the seats of power (maybe even
palaces) of regional strongmen or heads of important families (gentes).
Villa
Obelisks
▪ An obelisk is a tall, four-sided, narrow tapering monument
which ends in a pyramid-like shape at the top. These were
originally called "tekhenu" by the builders, the ancient
Egyptians. The Greeks who saw them used the Greek
'obeliskos' to describe them, and this word passed into Latin
and then English. The Romans commissioned obelisks in an
ancient Egyptian style. Examples include:
▪ Arles, France – the Arles Obelisk, in Place de la République, a
4th-century obelisk of Roman origin
▪ Benevento, Italy – three Roman obelisks
▪ Munich – obelisk of Titus Sextius Africanus, Staatliches
Museum Ägyptischer Kunst, Kunstareal, 1st century AD,
5.80 m
▪ Rome – there are five ancient Roman obelisks in Rome.
Triumphal Arch
▪ The innovation of the Romans
was to use these elements in a
single free-standing structure.
▪ Cột thuần tuý trang trí trên mặt đứng,

▪ Little is known about how the Romans
viewed triumphal arches. Pliny the Elder,
writing in the first century AD, was the
only ancient author to discuss them. He
wrote that they were intended to
"elevate above the ordinary world" an
image of an honoured person usually
depicted in the form of a statue with
a quadriga

ANCIENT ROMAN ARCHITECTURE ORIGINAL
▪ The first recorded Roman triumphal arches were set up in the time of the Roman
Republic. Generals who were granted a triumph were termed triumphators and would
erect fornices or honorific arches bearing statues to commemorate their victories. Roman
triumphal practices changed significantly at the start of the imperial period when the first Roman
Emperor Augustus decreed that only emperors would be granted triumphs. The triumphal arch
changed from being a personal monument to being an essentially propagandistic one, serving to
announce and promote the presence of the ruler and the laws of the state. Arches were not
necessarily built as entrances, but – unlike many modern triumphal arches – they were often
erected across roads and were intended to be passed through, not round.
▪ Most Roman triumphal arches were built during the imperial period. By the fourth century AD
there were 36 such arches in Rome, of which three have survived – the Arch of Titus (AD 81),
the Arch of Septimius Severus (203-205) and the Arch of Constantine (312). Numerous arches
were built elsewhere in the Roman Empire. The single arch was the most common, but many
triple arches were also built, of which the Triumphal Arch of Orange (circa AD 21) is the earliest
surviving example. From the 2nd century AD, many examples of the arcus quadrifrons – a square
triumphal arch erected over a crossroads, with arched openings on all four sides – were built,
especially in North Africa. Arch-building in Rome and Italy diminished after the time of Trajan (AD
98-117) but remained widespread in the provinces during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD; they were
often erected to commemorate imperial visits.

▪ Generally, Roman bridges featured wedge-shaped primary arch stones (voussoirs) of the same in size and
shape. The Romans built both single spans and lengthy multiple arch aqueducts, such as the Pont du
Gard and Segovia Aqueduct. Their bridges featured from an early time onwards flood openings in the piers,
e.g. in the Pons Fabricius in Rome (62 BC), one of the world's oldest major bridges still standing.
▪ Roman engineers were the first and until the industrial revolution the only ones to construct bridges
with concrete, which they called Opus caementicium. The outside was usually covered with brick or ashlar,
as in the Alcántara bridge.
▪ The Romans also introduced segmental arch bridges into bridge construction. The 330 m long Limyra
Bridge in southwestern Turkey features 26 segmental arches with an average span-to-rise ratio of
5.3:1, giving the bridge an unusually flat profile unsurpassed for more than a millennium.
▪ Cầu Trajan vượt sông Danube featured open-spandrel segmental arches made of wood (standing on 40 m
high concrete piers). This was to be the longest arch bridge for a thousand years both in terms of overall
and individual span length, while the longest extant (còn tồn tại) Roman bridge is the 790 m long Puente
Romano at Mérida.
