Definitions
3.1 In addition to the definitions in AP-C87-15, the following definitions applies to this Specification.
Strip Filter Drain A geocomposite subsurface drain comprising of a core manufactured from
high density polyethylene (HDPE), wrapped in a non-woven geotextile and
complying with the requirements of Clause 5.
Flexible Strip A Strip Filter Drain with a core that complies with Clause 5.6.
Filter Drain
Rigid Strip Filler A Strip Filter Drain with a core that complies with Clause 5.7.
Drain
HOLD POINT 1.
Process Held Supply of subsurface drainage products
Submission Details The Quality Plan must be provided to the Principal at least 10 working days prior
to the delivery of the materials to the Site.
4.2 All subsurface drainage materials must be manufactured under a Quality Management System
which is independently certified as fully complying with AS/NZS ISO 9001 by an organisation
accredited by JAS-ANZ (or an affiliated international certification organisation).
General
5.1 If the dimensions of the Strip Filter Drain are not specified on the Drawings, the thickness must not
be less than 40 mm and the height must not be less than:
a) 300 mm where the strip drain is placed at construction joints/overlapping joint of reinforced
concrete panels; or
b) 150 mm elsewhere.
5.2 The tolerance on the specified height and thickness dimensions must be within plus or minus 5.0%
of the specified value and measurements of dimensions must be made in accordance with
ASTM D2122.
5.3 The Contractor must provide a sample of the Strip Filter Drain with the Quality Plan.
5.4 The Strip Filter Drain must be completely free of loose plastics, lead, cadmium, mercury or
leachable plastic materials. The design life of the strip drain must not be less than the design life of
the structure. If a Strip Filter Drain is used as a substitute for a pipe (where permitted), the flow
capacity of the Strip Filter Drain must not be less than the pipe being replaced.
Core
5.5 The core of a Strip Filter Drain and the couplings / fittings must:
a) be manufactured from either virgin or recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) meeting the
requirements of ASTM D7001 - Class B; and
b) not show signs of cracks, splits or significant signs of indentation when tested in accordance
with TS 02822.08, TS 02822.09 and TS 02822.10.
5.6 The core of a Flexible Strip Filter Drain comprises of cuspated HDPE or similar and is only suitable
for applications which are not subject to traffic loading, such as behind retaining walls, reinforced
earth walls and soil nails. The stiffness of a Flexible Strip Filter Drain must comply with Table 5.6
when tested in accordance with Appendix H of AS 2439.1.
5.7 The core of a Rigid Strip Filler Drain must comprise of an elongated corrugated core providing
sufficient strength for use under traffic loading. Unless specified otherwise on the Drawings, the
flow capacity and load bearing characteristics of Rigid Strip Filler Drains must comply with Table
5.7.
5.8 The perforations in the core of a Rigid Strip Filter Drain must be at least 20 mm from the bottom of
the core.
Filter Fabric
5.9 The core of the Strip Filter Drain must be wrapped in a non-woven geotextile which complies with
ATS 2160. The strength class and filtration class of the geotextile must be determined in
accordance with Table 6.4 of ATS 2160.
5.10 The geotextile must be attached to the core in a manner which prevents damage or dislodgement
of the geotextile during installation. The longitudinal join in the geotextile must be continuously heat
or electric welded so that its integrity is unaffected during installation.
6.2 Notwithstanding AS 2439.1, testing of pipe stiffness and measurement of perforation dimensions
must be carried out in accordance with test methods TS 02822.05 and TS 02822.06. The minimum
frequency of testing is one per 2,000 m or part thereof.
8.2 Unless the filter fabric is supplied pre-fitted to the perforated plastic drainage pipe, it must be
supplied in continuous rolls of between 1 kg and 2.5 kg mass and packed in opaque plastic bags.
The bags must be clearly labeled showing the diameter of drainage pipe for which it is
manufactured, the mass of fabric enclosed and the batch identification number.
Fittings
9.1 Joints and connections for strip filter drains and corrugated pipes must comply with the
manufacturer’s recommendations.
10.2 Except for corrugated plastic drainage pipe (which must be tested in accordance with AS 2439.1),
the minimum frequency of testing of the subsurface drainage products is one test per 2,000 metres
(or part thereof).
10.3 With each batch of subsurface drainage materials delivered to the Site, the Contractor must submit
the following to the Principal:
a) a certificate of compliance that the materials comply with the requirements of this Specification
and are appropriate for its specified usage. The certificate must identity the Australian and / or
New Zealand standard that the materials comply with.
b) test results demonstrating compliance with this Specification.
10.4 The certificate and the test results must not be more than 6 months old when delivered to Site,
except for the Change in Core Area test (ASTM D6244), which must not be more than 24 months
old.
Identification
11.2 Each lot of subsurface drainage products supplied must be clearly marked with the following
information on an adhesive label affixed to the product and packaging:
a) Manufacturer’s name and / or trademark and product identification;
b) Nominal cross section dimensions (outside diameter or length and width);
c) Length;
d) Pipe classification - type and stiffness (where applicable);
e) Nominal slot width and length (where applicable);
f) Date of manufacture; and
g) Unique coil / batch number.
11.3 Drainage pipe must also conform to the marking requirements in AS 2439.1 or AS 4139 (as
applicable).
The slot dimensions and spacing must comply with the following requirements:
The top of each pipe must be indelibly marked with the word “TOP”.
