Advantages and Disadvantages of Learning English

English is a language that is nicknamed the international language. In Indonesia, English

then became one of the languages included in the education curriculum after Indonesian
independence, called TEFL. In its development, English is increasingly interested so that several
universities in Indonesia, especially in NTT, make English a special study program. Non-formal
English learning institutions are also growing and developing, even English teachers who then
open private English courses. Especially in Kupang, there are several non-formal institutions for
learning English such as English First, Fortuna English Course, Agape, etc. Learning English is
believed to be able to help society, especially students, to compete globally both in terms of
education and human resources. In learning English some advantages and disadvantages are
provided. The advantages of learning English include increasing knowledge. We know that many
books, seminars, journals, and educational papers are written and use English, by learning
English we will find it easier to access and understand the contents of existing books, papers, or
seminars. Also, English makes it easier for us to communicate with foreigners who are not even
from Europe because English is a global language. This is important for people who live in
tourism areas such as NTT.

However, learning English from the wrong source can become miserable. For example, if
we learn English using songs, listen to songs, often the lyrics in the song do not give attention to
the grammar side but are more concerned with poetic and pleasant to hear. Another disadvantage
is that if we don't learn by practicing speaking English, the skills that are built are writing and
listening while speaking skills become less. Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded
that learning English from the right source and the right way is very important and good for us in
competing internationally in various fields. The right human resources can advance the nation.
