Week Three Weekend Work

Read the passage below carefully, and in full sentences answer the
questions that follow

It is surprising to see these days, people have decided to take the law in their hands.
This is so because a lot of crimes have continued to take place in the areas where
we stay.

Whereas there are security organs, they have not done a lot to stop bad people
from killing innocent natives in our sub county.

One of the areas where such incidences have been happening is Kyoto Village.
One night a loud alarm was heard near the Local Chairperson’s home. Three
thieves had attacked the village. On hearing the alarm, the natives woke up and
rushed to find out what had happened. They were shocked to find their
chairperson lying in pool of blood.

The Village Defence Secretary telephoned the nearby police, but they delayed to
come to help in searching for the killers. The people decide to do it themselves.

9 |P.6 ENGLISH HOMEWORK TERM ONE 2024

Luckily enough they found the three thieves hiding in a bush next to the Late
Chairperson’s home.

They pick sticks, stones, pangas, knives and whatever their hands could land on.
They beat the three thieves to death. They went ahead and burnt their bodies to
ashes.

Six hours later, the police arrived. The people showed them the body of their
murdered chairperson and the remains of the burnt thieves.

The police blamed people for taking the law in their hands. They said it was ‘mob
justice’.

The natives, however told police that they were tired of people who do not want to
work. Instead, they obtain wealth through killing others.

In the end, the police drove the bodies of the thieves and the Late Chairperson on a
pick-up van to Pondwe Hospital. They promised to carry out investigation about
what had happened. Since then, there has been peace in Kyoto Village. People now
sleep without fear.

The number of accidents in Uganda has reached an alarming state. Recent media
report revealed that a total of 50 people perished in Masaka in the month of August.
According to the traffic department, 17 of these were pedestrians, 5 were cyclists and
the rest were passengers.

The month was characterized with several fatal accidents that occurred mostly at
black spots. Black spots are road points where accidents are common, such as sharp
corners or curves, portholes, narrow lanes, sloppy areas etc. most accidents occur
here. “These spots have claimed a number of lives and we need to get a lasting
solution,” said the Masaka Extra Regional spokesman, Simon Kato. It should be the
concern of every road user to have maximum discipline while on the road. He said
Motorists, pedalists, pedestrians, cyclists, animal gazers are all stakeholders in this
affair.

In response to Simon Kato’s report about these incidents, the police boss, Maj Gen.
Kale Kaihura lamented over the accidents on Uganda’s roads. He said last year
alone, 15,426 accidents were registered. Of these 1,226 accidents occurred at night,
5005 in the morning, 6104 in the afternoon and 3,091 in the evening.

Kale Kaihura blamed the deaths on careless driving, over speeding, careless

Week Seven Prep Work
Read the passage below carefully and answer questions about it in full
sentences.
It was one Friday morning during the third term holiday when Faridah Namayanja
went to Centenary Rural Development Bank, Kitebi Branch to deposit her school
fees. This was after her P.5 teacher of English, Mr. Kyasanku Alfred had taught them
about banking. Paying school fees was one of the activities Faridah had learnt during
the topic and she was so much interested in doing it practically.

Faridah was checked by a female security guard before she entered the bank. As
soon as she entered the bank, she went to the reception and asked the receptionist
what she was supposed to do. She was told to pick the deposit slip forms from the
counter and then fill them properly according to the information which was there.
Before filling the deposit form, Faridah remembered that she had to arrange her
money. Arranging the money had to be done according to denominations. For
example, she had to put the fifty-thousand-shilling notes alone, twenty-thousand-
shilling notes alone, and so on. When that was done, she had to total the amount
under each denomination and then wrote it on the form.
Faridah joined the queue to the tellers. It took her about thirty minutes to reach
the counter. She gave the deposit form to the teller who counted the money,
signed the deposit form and then stamped it. The teller gave one copy of the
deposit form to Faridah and she went back home smiling, since she had deposited
her fees successfully.

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
Most school in Uganda carry out debates. This is done either weekly or fortnightly. In
the debates, a subject or motion is presented and pupils give in their views or points
about it. There are those who support it and those who are against it.
One morning, Mrs. Kaihura Esther, Our English teacher in primary six suggested a
motion. This excited all the pupils in my class. “GIRLS SHOULD BE AS EDUCATED AS
BOYS,” she suggested.
The girls clapped and shouted at the top of their voices.
Later, our teacher explained to us the intention of suggesting the motion and
enlightened us on a number of issues which needed much of our attention. She asked
us to get possible views in favour of our sex based on present life situation. After her
long explanation, she asked us to choose our leaders in the debate like the chairperson,
secretary and the timekeeper. She also helped us to suggest the opposers and
proposers. Four members on each side were identified.
The following day, Tuesday at 2:00pm, a debate was held and I was among the main
opposers. At the end of the debate, the secretary read out the points as presented by
the speakers and announced the winner. It was my side that won the debate. The
teacher thanked us for presenting strong views and encouraged the proposers to
work hard in the fourth coming debate.
