PROJECT 3 WINTER 2024

For my public speaking activity I

reworked a case study for my Thesis
project to gain feedback and
presented it to 3 of my friends who
volunteered to participate. This
activity helped me improve my
public speaking / presentation skills
which are necessary for my design
practice as having good
presentations skills will be necessary
in order to pitch my ideas and sell
others on them when I’m working in
my future design career.

ACTIVITY STATEMENT 3
DESN40578
PROJECT 3 WINTER 2024

Sharing my voice is a way to be generous with my

community because it allows me to share my own
personal experiences and insights with others, whether
it be related to my work or anything else. People can
learn from these experiences and find value in them.
They can also use them to motivate them, as I think that
sharing your voice and experiences with others can be a
fantastic motivator for them, and inspire people to do
the same. This results in a more connected community,
regardless of that communities scale. So sharing your
voice can have a lot of benefits on others and your
community as a whole. Even though I feel this way
about sharing my voice, I feel it is still something that I
have trouble doing. I always get overly nervous before
having to present to others, which results in me
forgetting what I have to say and having it come out
wrong from overthinking during the whole thing. I know
that it is an important skill to have to not only get my
own ideas across, but to work collaboratively with
others as well. I would like to work on improving these
skills during this project and work on ways to make
myself feel more comfortable presenting to others.

Working on this decision making matrix allowed me to map out the

perfect level of risk for me to take with this project. this is something
that has always been kind of scary for me, so mapping out
potential fears for this project has been extremely helpful. I have
decided to focus on employing the skills I worked on while I do my
case study presentation.

I put presenting to people I’m unfamiliar with in the danger zone.

Even though I will have to present to lots of people I don’t know in
my career, while I employ these new tactics for presenting I think it
would be more helpful to try them with people I know already.

To improve my presentation skills and to help myself have

an easier time presenting, I focused on practicing my
presentation over and over again until I barely stuttered.
This helped me when It came to presenting a lot, as I found
myself barely stuttering during my presentation and this
made me more confident in myself as my presentation
kept going smoothly. I also focused on not being worried
about having to take pauses sometimes. This also helped
me not mess up from being anxious during presenting, as it
allowed me to collect my thoughts and not start speaking
at a million miles an hour. Lastly, though you can’t see it in
the presentation video, I focused on body movement while
speaking a lot. I found this really help me feel more
comfortable speaking to others. Being animated while
presenting also helped me memorize what I had to say and
how I wanted to say it, as I could match certain movements
to what I wanted to say in my head. I overall think this was
really successful in helping me feel more comfortable in
presenting to others.

DELIVERABLES 8
DESN40578
PROJECT 3 WINTER 2024

As stated on the last page, I think I was successful in

achieving my goal for this project. I was able to meet
my success criteria for methods of making presenting
easier for myself, and the feedback I received from my
audience was reassuring. They said I seemed
“confident”, “knowledgable” and “prepared”. This was
great to hear and made me feel I was successful as this
as well. Though I don’t think I’m fully comfortable with
presenting to others, I think this gave me a great
confidence boost and made me realize that with
enough time and effort I could improve at something I
always thought I would be terrible at. I was surprised
how quickly my outlook changed over the course of the
project, as the more practice I put in I could really feel
myself feeling more loose and open to the idea of
presenting my ideas to others. I will make sure I
continue to work on this skills as my career progresses
and I leave school. Luckily, this is a skill I will get a lot of
natural practice in once I am in the workforce and can
always continue to work towards improving on.
