10. Read the following paragraph and answer the following questions. (Case Study Based
Question)
Relative velocity of an object is the velocity relative to some other object which might be
stationary, moving slowly, moving with the same velocity, moving with higher velocity
or moving in opposite direction. Relative velocity of an object A w.r.t object B, when
both are in motion, is the time rate of change of position object A w.r.t. that of B. If the
two objects move in the same direction, then
VAB = VA – VB
That is why when two fast trains move in the same direction, each appears to go slow
relative to the other.
If the object B moves in the opposite of direction of A then,
VAB = VA – (-VB) = VA +VB
That is why when two fast trains cross each other in opposite directions, each appears to
go very fast relative to the other.
(a) Can the relative velocity of two bodies be greater than the absolute velocity of either
body? Give reason for your answer.
(b) Two trains , each 50 m long, are travelling in opposite directions with velocities 10m/s
and 15 m/s respectively. Find out the time in which they cross each other?
