Aesop’s Fables
Aesop was a slave, who lived in Ancient Greece around the time of 620 BC and 564 BC.
Throughout the years, Aesop wrote many fables that have become popular today. These
popular fables include, “The Tortoise and the Hare”, “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”, “The Lion and
the Mouse”, as well as several others. Fables are short stories that teach a lesson, usually
including animals with personalities similar to humans. In fact these fables are still used
to teach children lessons today. During Aesop’s time and today, many people say or suggest
that Aesop did not actually exist, but there are several different Ancient Greek works that
mention him. For example, Aristophanes, who was a playwright and comedy writer living in
Ancient Greece, mentioned Aesop in one of his comedies The Wasps. As well as Plato who
was a philosopher that lived in Ancient Greece, also mentioned Aesop in one of his works.
It is likely that Aesop was alive during the 6th century BC and wrote these fables because
there are works that mention him. In conclusion, whether people debate that Aesop was
real or not, his fables have affected people all around the world by teaching and educating
children everywhere.
