Team Report Group A24: Exploring Strategies to Mitigate the Spread of Flu-Like

Diseases Among Students: A Case Study of Grand International School

Introduction

As students of Grand International School, we embarked on a project to address the

increasing incidence of flu-like diseases within our school community. Motivated by the
disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and our personal experiences, we recognised
the urgency of taking proactive measures to safeguard the health and well-being of our fellow
students.

Problem Statement

The rising prevalence of flu-like diseases poses a significant health risk within school
environments, disrupting academic activities and impacting student well-being. At Grand
International School, the observed increase in flu-like infections among students necessitated
the exploration of strategies to mitigate their spread and minimize their impact on the school
community.

Literature Review

Previous studies have highlighted the importance of preventive measures in mitigating the
spread of flu-like diseases within school settings (Thompson, 2019). Research emphasises the
susceptibility of children and adolescents to influenza infections and the potential for schools
to serve as transmission hubs. Effective interventions, such as vaccination, hand hygiene
promotion, and respiratory etiquette, have been recommended to reduce transmission rates
and protect student health.

Action Plan

Our project aimed to assess the prevalence and patterns of flu-like diseases among students
and develop targeted interventions to reduce their incidence. We conducted surveys and
interviews to gather insights from stakeholders and identified potential sources of
transmission within the school environment. Our interventions included promoting hand
hygiene, cough etiquette, and sanitation practices, as well as advising flued students to wear
masks and practice social distancing.

Successes

We successfully presented our findings to the school community through presentations,

posters, and flyers, raising awareness about the importance of preventive measures. Our
efforts resulted in increased awareness and engagement among students, teachers, and staff,

highlighting the effectiveness of our interventions in promoting health and well-being within
the school.

Challenges

Unforeseen challenges, such as a team member's accident and time constraints, impacted the
effectiveness of our efforts. These challenges hindered our ability to fully realize our goals
and emphasized the importance of flexibility and adaptability in project implementation.

Future Plans

Moving forward, we plan to address the limitations of our research by conducting broader
investigations beyond the school environment. We aim to collaborate with external partners
and engage with the wider community to develop comprehensive strategies for mitigating the
spread of flu-like diseases.

Conclusion

In conclusion, our project to explore strategies to mitigate the spread of flu-like diseases at
Grand International School highlighted the importance of proactive measures in protecting
student health and promoting a safe learning environment. Despite challenges, our efforts laid
the foundation for future initiatives aimed at addressing this critical issue and fostering a
culture of health and well-being within our school community.
