QFW SERIES STEAM

TURBINE
GENERATOR
NANYANG EXPLOSION PROTECTION GROUP CO., LTD

1. SCOPE
The generators built in our company are divided into two models, the basic model and the developed
model. The former is the air cooled steam turbine generator which is called QF series in China, and
the later is developed based on the former according to the different drive machine by varying the
generator construction. For QF steam turbine generator, it is of closed air circling cooling system,
with air cooler mounted underneath the generator frame air exit. The rotor is made of complete steel
forging, mounted with axial flow or centrifuging fans at both ends. The excitation is brushless type
and further identified as QFW. Without the slip ring and thus resulted contact point in the electrical
circuit, there will be no disturbance on the wireless wave, avoiding the various failures due to bad
contact when it is worn down by friction, and thus enhance the machine’s reliability and reducing the
maintenance work. In spite of this, static silicon control excitation can also be supplied instead as
required by customer.

Regarding to our generator, they are mainly QFW series brushless generator. It has features such as
advanced design, compact construction, rarefied manufacturing, reliable operation, convenient
maintenance, and long service life. It can be coupled to steam turbines for all kinds of application,
such as blast furnace TRT, cement kiln heat recovery turbine, natural gas, coal gas, waste burning,
terrestrial heat, or for plant power generation, providing not only the solution for energy conservation
but also remarkable economic benefits to our clients.

The power rating of our generator is as follows:

QFW-2P 3000-60000KW, voltage 6.3kV or 10.5kV, frequency 50Hz, enclosure protection IP44;
QFW-4P 3000-50000KW, voltage 6.3kV or 10.5kV, frequency 50Hz, enclosure protection IP54;

2. STANDARDS

4. CONSTRUCTION
Both QF and its developed generators are well matured products in our company. In year 2001, we
had further introduced generator manufacturing technology from a foreign company, whose
advanced electrical and structure design had enabled our generator design with a better
construction, easier connection, installation, operation and maintenance, greatly improved the
uninterrupted operation time while reduced the power system failure opportunity. The construction
features of 2P generator are as follows:

4.1 General
The generator is of two layer To prevent harmful shaft current,
constructions, with the closed cycling insulation between bearing and ground
ventilation cooling system and a cooler at Non driven end and earthling brush
mounted beneath the generator. The on the turbine end is fitted.
single layer arrangement is also
available on request, with cooler
mounted on the top.
The generator stator, bearing pedestals
are all mounted on the base plate made
from several pieces steel, which to be
completed together, leveled, and fixed
on the foundation by bolts in the power
plant. To adjust the mounting
dimensions, sliding plates is provided
for base plate, and shims for stator, end
shields, bearing pedestals. A solid base
plate is also available if a quick
installation is aksed.

4.2 Stator design

The generator stator consists of stator frame, stator core and winding. The frame is made from
steel plates, light but very strong, and divided into many air blocks inside along in axial
direction. The end shields at both ends are made of cast iron, featured with inspection window
and air tight facilities. The bottom cover also is welded steel plates, together with the end
shields it is bolted on the stator frame. Underneath the bottom cover at exciter end, an
insulation plate is fitted where the stator leads comes out. The stator core is built from high
quality silicon steel covered on both sides with strong insulation. The stator core is sectioned
and pressed by dove tail bars around the core, which is further clamped tightly on the
supporting bars fixed on the frame. Between every two sections, ‘I’ shape bars are used to
form the radial ventilation paths.
The stator coil is half coil, made from multi-strand bare copper wrapped with fibre glass paper
NANYANG EXPLOSION PROTECTION GROUP CO., LTD
(some of them with interposing coil). The insulation class is F, mica paper tapped and hot
pressed. The winding ends are wrapped by fibre rope and braced tightly, so that the power unit
has a greatly improved short circuit impact resistance capability.

4.3 Rotor design

The rotor shaft is made of a solid steel
alloy, slotted at radial direction to insert
the rotor coils.
The rotor coils are made from cooled
pulled flat copper wire, class F insulated.
The end bells mounted on both ends
are of non magnetic steel.
The rotor fans are either centrifugal fans
or axial flow fans with high tensile
aluminum alloy blades mounted on both
ends.

4.4 Bearings
The generator bearings are high pressure oil recycling lubricated, fitted within the cast bearing
houses. It has self aligning bearing pads, covered with babbitt alloy to avoid the Pb-Sn Alloy at
high temperature. Oil outlets are fitted on both sides of bearings for customer’s selection. The
high pressure oil system can be provided according to customer’s requirements.
The lubrication oil shall be provided by turbine supplier using a common system.

4.5 Cooling system

The cooling system is designed according to airflow theory together with generator output, with
air pressure head provided by fans mounted on the rotor; To ensure the generator can be
cooled efficiently, the stator frame is allocated into several air out blocks along the axial
direction and the stator core are divided into air ducts. Further more special air slots are
machined on the rotor shaft.
The heat generated during the generator operation will emit through stator and rotor coil
insulation, go to the air cooler and back to the generator, to complete a cooling circulation. The
cooler tube is made of copper H62. The cooler design is made so that the generator can
deliver minimum 66% of rated output with one section out service;
Air filters are provided in the cooler sections for air circuit supplement.

4.6 Brushless excitation

The brushless excitation consists of AC main exciter, pilot PMG, rotating rectifier, all rotating
with the same shaft center of main generator. The use of PMG greatly can improve the stability
of the power unit.
4.6.1 The main exciter rotor core is made from thin steel laminations sandwiched between end
NANYANG EXPLOSION PROTECTION GROUP CO., LTD
plates and shrunk onto the shaft. The star connected armature winding is a two layer
wave winding with the output leads going directly to the three-phase bridge rectifier.
4.6.2 The rotating rectifier consists of two wheels, with three phase rectifying electrical circuits.
These two wheels are used for anode and cathode, electrical powered, and connected to
generator rotor coils.
4.6.3 The PMG and AC exciter share the common shaft, frame and rotor, extending outside
the pedestal bearing at the exciter end.
