This document provides a list of capabilities that are available for Joule. Each chapter corresponds to a specific
SAP solution and describes the capabilities specific for their business use case. Based on your SAP solution
portfolio, the relevant capabilities are automatically provisioned for the assistant which is then deployed in your
tenant in SAP BTP.

Joule can respond to greetings and casual conversation.
• Conversational Search
If Joule is unable to match the user's query with an existing intent, it performs a conversational search
on SAP Help Portal content as a fallback mechanism. The retrieved search results are summarized using
generative AI, and presented to the user as an answer to the question. In addition, Joule displays a list of
the top three search results. With a click on the title link of the search results, you can open the topic in SAP
Help Portal.

Term Definition
conversation A conversation is an open-ended, pre-defined collection of dialog steps (request or response) between an
end-user and a digital assistant version. It represents the interaction between an end-user and a digital
assistant.
capability A capability is a set of skills that semantically belong together alongside the language understanding in the
respective domain. For example, a capability Purchasing holds order creation and check delivery status skills
along with the language understanding specific for each skill.
digital assis- Allows an end-user to interact with the SAP software by simulating a human conversation. A digital assis-
tant tant acts on end-user intents by either executing a specific action such asI would like to order

5 Joule in SAP SuccessFactors
Learn about Joule capabilities available in the SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite.
Leveraging its generative AI capabilities, Joule aims to understand your requests, retrieve information, and
complete your tasks in a conversational way. For example, instead of manually navigating to a feature or page
buried deep, you can describe the current task to Joule, who will help automate tasks or take you to places
where you can find desired data. By using Joule, you can easily interact with the system and increase your
productivity.
Related Information
Before you start using Joule in the SAP SuccessFactors system, be aware of the following notes.
• Joule only supports English, which means you need to set your system language to English before using it
and give your input in English. You can change system language at Settings Change Language .
• Joule is only available on the Web. It's not supported in native mobile apps.
• When interacting with Joule, have a single chat session at a time. If you use the same account to run
separate chat sessions simultaneously (for example, in multiple tabs or browsers), you may not get
expected responses from Joule.
• Joule provides one piece, rather than multiple pieces, of information each time. For example, for the
request "show my location and cost center", you won't get any requested information.
• Proxy access isn't supported.

5.2 Conversational Patterns
Joule in SAP SuccessFactors supports three conversational patterns: transactional, navigational, and
informational.
• Transactional: Assists users in efficient completion of their tasks on the conversational user interface,
saving their time from going to corresponding pages to do the tasks.
In the transactional pattern, Joule can not only provide users with general HR information about
themselves and their colleagues, but also give easy and quick access to the tasks they want to perform. For
example, when users say "I want to request feedback from my manager", Joule collects their questions
and then sends the request directly to their manager. Additionally, when users want to access user
information, Joule can recognize single entities, such as "my cost center" and "Alex's office location",
instead of requiring users to enter a complete sentence.
• Navigational: Helps users navigate to the functionality they're looking for without having to go through
multiple links to reach a destination page.
In the navigational pattern, Joule can direct users to SAP SuccessFactors pages where they can find the
information they need or get their job done. For example, when users want to view the time off instructions
of their organization, Joule provides a link to the Time Off page and informs users of the place where they
can get the information.
• Informational: Helps users retrieve the information from existing documents without having to ask HR for
assistance.
In the informational pattern, Joule can provide access to important documents and policies for users. For
example, when users need to understand their organization's HR policies, they can simply interact with
Joule to retrieve the relevant documents. This saves time for both employees and HR personnel, improving
employee self-service experience and increasing HR work efficiency.
We've introduced the following use case categories for each conversational pattern:

Use cases available in Employee Central Quick Actions take precedence over equivalent cases in People
Profile. For example, when you check your location through Joule, if configured correctly, the View Location
case for Employee Central Quick Actions, rather than the View Location case in People Profile, will be
triggered.

Learn about Joule capabilities available in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition.
Joule offers a navigational pattern to help users find the functionality they are looking for. It is especially useful
to new or occasional users without prior knowledge of individual SAP Fiori apps.
The navigational pattern can help you complete your goals by navigating you to the relevant SAP Fiori app and
letting you work directly in the app's web UI, where you can take advantage of all its features.

SAP Fiori Launchpad Users can type requests into Joule. Joule is able to identify and propose SAP Fiori
apps that are most suitable for the requested task. Users can then choose a specific app and open it
directly to proceed further. Navigation is enabled for core apps for Procurement, Finance, Sales, and Service
Management.
