Program Notes

Although the work is written in 4/4 time, it should almost feel like it is swinging in 2/2.
Generally speaking, the piece is romantic and warrants occasional glissando between notes in the
melody. If this can be demonstrated, the students could practice this for fun on the side, but it

ns
would be difficult to get a young orchestra to do this together.
Violin I has the melody in first position. Later they see accidentals of mixed sharps and flats in
one measure. Although this can be confusing, it makes sense in this context and functionality.

io
Violas have the melody in first position with the option of an octave higher in third position with
no shifting for more advanced players. The cellos have the melody in first position with the
option of an octave hirer for more advanced players in extended 4th position with one small shift.

The harmonic minor requires extended 3 or 4 on the g© to an f ª.
