What is CITATION?

It's the way you tell your readers that certain content came from another source in your work. It also gives
your readers the necessary details to locate the source again.

 Information about the author


 The work's title
 Name and location of the organization that released your source copy
 The date on which your copy was published

Importance of Citation
The only way of using the work of other people without plagiarizing is to give credit to the original author
by referencing sources. But there are a number of other reasons why sources should be cited:

1. For someone who wants to find out more about your ideas and where they
came from, citations are extremely helpful.
2. Citing sources illustrates the amount of analysis you have done.
3. Citing sources enhances your work by supplying your proposals with outside
help.
When do we need to Cite?

1. Whenever you use an idea that someone else has shared before.
2. Whenever you refer directly to another person's job.
3. Whenever the work of someone else has been crucial in forming your own
thoughts.

What are the Features of Effective Writing?

1. Thesis Focus - As the writer fulfills the role of timely delivery, the writer must clearly develop a focus.

2. Organization - It is the growth, connection, and completeness of ideas.


3. Support and Elaboration - The writer provides sufficient elaboration to present the ideas and/or events
clearly.

4. Grammatical Conventions - It requires correctness in the creation, use, and mechanics of sentences.
5. Style – It is the control of language that is appropriate to the purpose, audience, and context of the
writing task.

WRITING A POSITION PAPER


What is a Position Paper?
-It is an essay that presents an arguable opinion about an issue.

What is its GOAL?


-The goal of a position paper is to convince the audience that the opinion presented is worth listening to.
-The main goal is not only to state and defend your position on the issue but also to show how your stance relates to
other positions.

What is its purpose?


-To argue your position on an issue raised in at least two of the articles that have been read which shows how your
position relates to those of the authors.

How to write a position paper?


-It follows three main elements/STRUCTURES;
1. Introduction, in which identifies the issue that will be discussed and states the author’s position on that issue. It is
usually one paragraph.

2. Body, which contains the central argument and can be further broken up into three unique sections:
a. Background information
b. Evidence supporting the author’s position (Use citation/reference)
c. A discussion of both sides of the issue, which addresses arguments that contradict the author’s position.
3. Conclusion, it restates the key points suggesting a resolution to the issue (if applicable). It is usually one
paragraph.

* The purpose of a position paper is to generate support on an issue. It describes a position on an issue and the
rational for that position. The position paper is based on facts that provide a solid foundation for your
assignment.
1. Use evidence to support your position, such as statistical evidence or dates and events.
2. Validate your position with authoritative references or primary source quotations.
3. Examine the strengths and weaknesses of your position.
4. Evaluate possible solutions and suggests courses of action.
