1. (a) Give an account of the Baptism of Jesus
Mathew 3:13 – 17
- Jesus came from galilee to the river Jordan
- He asked john to Baptise him
- John at first refused.
- He said Jesus should Baptise him instead
- But Jesus persuaded him to do it
- Jesus was praying as he was being Baptised
- As he went out of the water, the heaven opened and
- A dove descended on him
- This was the spirit of God coming to equip him for his work
- A voice from heaven was heard saying
- This is my son whom I love I am well pleased with him

(b) What is the significance of Jesus baptism to Christians today? Give three points
- Jesus identified himself with the people he came to save
- He would later represent the people on the cross. So he wanted to show that he was one with
them.
- His Baptism was a symbol of his future death and resurrection
- It was a sign that he intended to carry out God’s purpose in building up His kingdom in dying
for man’s sin on the cross

(c) Suwi and Sarah are Christians. Sarah goes to a church that baptizes its believers while
Suwi goes to one that does not baptize its members. Give two Biblical reasons would give
as to why Suwi needs to baptized and state one reason Suwi would give to object baptism.
Reasons for baptism
- It is a command of Christ
- It is an outward symbol of inward reality of a genuine conversation
- It is identification with Christ in his death, burial and resurrection
- A Christian who is immersed in water is a sign to the world that he has to his/her sins and has
risen to a new life in Jesus Christ
- It is an association with the body of Christ

- Baptism does not bring forgiveness of sins or conversion

(d) Give one similarity and one difference between Christian and Hindu practices of
initiating people into their religion.

- Both use a sign and symbol as a way of admission in their religion
Difference
- Christian: immersion in water is a sign or symbol of admission
- Hindu: A boy will receive a sacred thread of initiation; a symbol of an upper class ( Hindus
initiation into his caste)
- Christians : Repentance and confession of their faith in Christ and living a life of obedience
shows one’s Christian faith
- Hindu: A triple – strand string, worn throughout his life means he is twice born

2. Describe how Jesus was tempted in the Garden of Gethsemane.

- Luke 22 : 39 – 46
- Jesus left the city and went, as he usually did to the mount of olives

- Then he went off from them about the distance of a stone’s throw
- And knelt down and prayed
- Father, ‘he said, ‘if you will, take this cup of suffering away from me.’
- Not my will, however, but your will be done.
- An angel from heaven appeared to him,
- And strengthened him

- His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground

(b) In which two ways do the example and help of Jesus enable Christians to resist
temptations?
- We should resist like Jesus
- We are encouraged to pray when faced with temptation

(c)(i) Kelvin was caught stealing guavas from Danny’s orchard. When asked, Kevin said
he was tempted by the way the guavas looked. State two points of Christian advice you
would give Kelvin with regard to:
- He must resist temptation
- He must pray that he may not fall into the same temptation

regard to temptation.
SIMILARITIES
- In both it is seen to associate God’s qualities with any person
- In both it is sin to believe in other gods other than one and only God
- In both it is not the act but thoughts adultery that are sinful

DIFFERNCES
Christianity: obey God out of love
Islam: obey God out of fear of judgment day

3. Relate the miracle of Jesus feeding the five thousand people

- Late in the afternoon, the twelve came to him and said,
- Send the crowd away so that they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside
- And find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here
- He replied, you give them something to eat
- They answered we have only five loaves of bread ad two fish.
- Unless we go and buy food for this entire crowd
- But he said to his disciples,
- Make them sit down in groups of fifty each
- The disciples did so, and everybody sat down
- Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to the heaven, he gave thanks and
broke them.
- Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people
- They all ate and were satisfied and
- The disciples picked up to twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over

(b) Show what the feeding of the five thousand people teaches about Jesus. State three

- Jesus is the only one who can satisfy people’s physical and spiritual needs
- Jesus has power over nature

(c) Mr. Banda is not quite content to see missionaries involved in the distribution of relief
foods to the people in their need. His belief is that, Christians need to give attention to

- Christians must meet both physical and spiritual needs of the people like what Jesus did
when he fed the five thousand

(d) State two similarities and two differences between the beliefs of Christians and
Muslims about miracles.
Similarities between the beliefs of Christianity and Muslims about miracles
- Both believe that miracles are performed through God’s holy men
- Both believe that miracles occur
- Both believe in a miracles
- Both believe in miracle working God
Differences
- Muslims believe that miracles can only be done by prophets sent by Allah
- Christians: God can use any of his faithful people to perform miracles
- Muslims miracles increase the influence and reputation of holy men and believe that the
Quran is a miracle through Muhammad

4. Relate the announcement of the birth of john the Baptist and the giving of the name
- During the time when herode was king of Judea
- There was a priest named Zechariah when belonged to the priestly order of abijah
- His wife’s name was Elizabeth, she also belonged to a priestly family
- They both lived good lives in Gods sight and obeyed fully all lord’s laws and commands
- They had no children because Elizabeth could not have any and she and Zachariah were
both very old
- One day Zechariah was doing his work as a priest in the Temple, taking his turn in the
daily service
- He was chosen by lord to burn incense on the altar.
- An angel of the lord appeared to him standing on the right of the altar were the incense
was burnt
- When Zechariah he was alarmed and failed afraid
- But the angel said to him don’t be afraid Zechariah God has heard your prayer
- Your wife will bear you a son, you are to name him john
- He will be a great man in the lord’s sight. He must not drink any wine or strong drink
- He will go ahead of the lord strong and mighty like prophet Elijah
- Zechariah said to the angel how shall I know if this is so, I am an old man and my wife
is old also
- I am Gabriel the angel answered I stand in the presence of God who sent
- Because you have not believed you will be unable to speak

(b) (i) What was the purpose of john the Baptist ministry? Give two points
- To prepare the nation for the coming of the messiah
- To be a healer of disorder and to convert many who were rebellious to right living
- He will be a spiritual Elijah, performing his tasks in the power of the Holy Spirit as
Elijah had done.
(ii) Show how these two points were fulfilled in his life.
- He appointed people to the coming messiah as a savior from their sins
- He fearlessly rebuked and commanded all to repent, regardless of social status or
position,
(c) A man feels very happy that he has been called to be a pastor, but he is not interested
and he says that I am just an ordinary man in society and believe that God cannot use me.
What Christian advice would you give him in relation to God’s direction in the lives of
Christians? State three points.
- God has a specific plan and purpose for every life
- God choses or calls people according to his will
- God uses people without a high status.
- He doesn’t force plans and purpose on us. We have the freedom to choose.
(d) State one similarity and one difference between the ways Muslims and Christians see
God as directing their lives.
- Both Christians and Muslims believe that God is the one who directs their lives
- Both believe that God plans each life
- Both accept inspired writings as guides in individual lives
Differences
- Basis for guidance in every Muslims life is the Quaran
- The Holy spirit is not mentioned in an individual’s guided

5. Narrate the incident when Jesus was asked about paying tax to Caesar.
- So they looked for an opportunity.
- They bribed some men to pretend they were sincere,
- And they sent them to trap Jesus with questions, some they could hand him over to the
authority and power of the Roman Governor.
- These spies said to Jesus, teacher, we know that what you say and teach is right.
- We know that you pay no attention to anyone’s status,
- But teach the truth about God’s will for people.
- Tell us, is it against our law for us to pay taxes to the Roman emperor, or not
- But Jesus saw through their trick and said to them,
- Show me a silver coin
- Whose face and name are these on it?
- The emperor’s they answered.

 - So Jesus said, well then, pay the Emperor what belongs to the emperor, and pay God
what belongs to God.
- So they kept quiet, amazed at His answer
(b) State two qualities of a good leader.
- A good leader will rule with justice
- Lead by example
(c) A church leader has been asked by a political party to contest as a member of
parliament, but refuses. State three reasons he would give to support his stand.
- Won’t have much time to do God’s work.
- Politics needs someone who tells lies
- Politics may lead me into the temptation of stealing public funds

(d) Give one point of similarity and one of difference between Christianity and Zambian
tradition religion. With regard to how children should honour and respect their parents
Similarity
- In both good leaders must be respected
- Obey and listen to the parents
Difference
- Christianity; loyalty and respect to leaders helps them to try to keep their
culture intact
- Zambian Tradition; mainly base their loyalty on family clan

6. Tell the parable of the good Samaritan

- On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus
- Teacher he asked what must I do to inherit eternal life ?
- What is written in the law? He replied.
- How do you read it?
- He answered, love the lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with
all your mind
- And love your neighbor as you love yourself
- You have answered correctly, Jesus replied.
- Do this and you will live
- But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus,
- And who is my neighbor?
- In reply Jesus said,’ a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho,
- When he fell into the hands of robbers,
- They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.
- A priest happened to be going down the same road,
- And when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.
- So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
- But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was;
- And when he saw him, he took pity on him,

- Then he put the man on his donkey,

robbers!

(c) (i) Mrs Ndumingo accused her aunt of bewitching her son. Her aunt vowed never to
see her again even though they live in the same town. What Christian attitude should Mrs
Ndumingo’s aunt show towards her enemies? State three points.

- There should be no segregation

(ii) How do people in modern Zambian society treaty their enemies? Give three points.

7. Describe how Jesus chased the traders from the Temple.
Luke 19:45-48
- Then he entered the temple area
- And began driving out those who were selling
- It is written, he said to them

- But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were

places of worship and prayer

Christianity; Church buildings should not be used for other activities other than religious

temples varying from one belief to another

8. Relate the parable of the rich fool
- A man in a crowd said to Jesus
- Teacher tell my brothers to divide with me the property our father left us
- Jesus answered him, my friend , who gave the right to judge or to divide the
property between you two
- And he went on to say to them all,
- Watch out and guard yourselves from every kind of greedy
- Because a person’s true life is not made up of things he owns, no matter how rich
he may be

- There was once a rich man who land, which bore good crops
- He begun to think to himself, I haven’t anywhere to keep all my crops. What can

- Then I will say to myself, lucky man
- You have all the good things you need for many years.
- Take life easy, eat , drink, and enjoy yourself.
- But God said to him, you fool
- This very night you have to give up your life
- Then who will get all these things you have kept for yourself
- And Jesus concluded,
- This is how it is with those who pile up riches for themselves butb are not in
God’s sight.

(b) What was Jesus trying to teach from this story concerning the right priorities in life?

 9. Give an account of Jesus raising the widow’s son at Nain.
Luke 7: 11-16
- Soon afterwards, jesus went to a town called Nain,
- Accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd
- Just as he arrived at the gate of the town,
- A funeral procession was coming out
- The dead man was the only son of a woman who was a widow,
- And a large crowd from the town was with her
- When the lord saw her, his heart was filled with pity for her
- And he said to her don’t cry
- Then he walked over and touched the coffin
- And the men carrying it stopped
- Jesus said young man get up I tell you
- the dead man sat up and begun to talk
- and Jesus gave him back to his mother
- they were filled with fear and praised God
- a great prophet has appeared among you
- they said God has to save his people

(b) In Jewish society, what problems did Jesus perceive for the widow in the death of her
son? Give two points.
- Removed any hopes of his becoming the bread winner of the house hold
- She was a destitute, but Jesus was moved with passion for her, so he raised the dead boy
to life again

(c) Suzyo and her husband are both Christians when they lost their child, close relatives
and friends were crying but the bereaved couple did not wail. After the burial, the
neighbours and the relatives asked Suzyo and her husband why they could not cry. What

10. Describe the problem which arose in the early church between the Hebrew and Greek
speaking Jewish widows. Acts 6:1-7
- And in those days when the number of disciples was multiplied
- There arose murmuring of Greeks against the Hebrews
- Because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution
- Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples and said to them
- It is not reasonable that we should leave the word of God and serve the table
- Therefore, my brothers look from among you and choose seven men
- Honest, full of the Holy Spirit
- And appoint them over this business
- But as for us we will give ourselves continually to prayer and ministry of the word
- And this pleased all the people
- And they chose Stephen a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit
- They lived as one regardless of race or tribe.

attitudes to the way differences are resolved in a community.

- Both solve problems at different levels/decision of the elders in a peaceful manner
- Both look at all aspects of the situations

Christianity – solver problems by looking at relevant scriptures/advice from fellow Christians.

11. Narrate the raising of jairus daughter

- When Jesus returned to the other side of the lake the people welcomed because they had
all been waiting for him
- When a man named jairus arrived he was an official in the local synagogue
- He throw himself down at Jesus feel and begged him to go his home because is only
daughter who was 12 years old was dying
- While Jesus was saying this, messenger came from the official house, your daughter has
dead, he told jairus, don’t bother the teacher any longer
- But Jesus heard and said to jairus, don’t be afraid only believe, and she will be well
- When he arrived at the house, he would not let anyone go in with him except peter, john
and James and the child’s father and the mother
- Everyone there was crying and mourning for the child
- Jesus said, don’t cry, the child is not dead she is only sleeping
- They all laughed at him because they knew that she was dead
- But Jesus took her by the hand, and called out get up my child,
- Her life returned, and she sat up at once and Jesus ordered them to give her something to
eat
- Her parents were astonished ,but Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone what had
happened

- I see heaven open and the Son OF Man standing at the right hand of God
- At this, they covered their ears and yelling at the top of their voices
- They all rushed at him
- Dragged him out of the city and began to stone him
- Meanwhile, the witness laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul
- While, they were stoning him, Stephen prayed,
- Lord Jesus receive my spirit
- Lord Jesus do not fold this sin against them,
- When he had said this, he fell asleep.

(b) Give two reasons why Christians moved away from Jerusalem after Stephen’s death.

- Keeping watch of their flock by night
- The Angel of the Lord stood before them
- The glory of the Lord shone around and were afraid
- The angel said to them “don‟t be afraid behold I bring good news for all people”
- For you today a saviour is born in the city of David
- This will be sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in stripes of clothes lying in a
manger
- Angels sung saying “glory to God in the highest
- And on earth peace and good will towards men
- The angel left the shepherds
- They found Mary and Joseph and the baby in the manger
- The shepherds spread the message of the angel
- All those who heard were surprised about the shepherds massage
- Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart
- The shepherds returned glorifying and praising God

- When Lazarus died he was taken to heaven
