Pay it forward – reflection task

CLIP 1

The reporter (Chris) says ‘You are a freak’ as the man walks away. Why do you
think that some people cannot understand the act of doing something kind
for strangers/ or receiving acts of kindness from strangers?

I think some people can't understand the act of doing something kind due to
it being abnormal. Most people are focused on their own lives and don’t pay
attention to others. This could be due to them not wanting to share their
hard-earned resources. In the clip, the man gives his own car, to Chris, a
person he doesn’t even know. Additionally, the car is in perfect condition and
is worth a good amount of money. Chris can’t comprehend this and therefore
calls the man a freak.

What is the assignment that Mr Simonet sets?

Mr Simonet assigned a very abnormal and very ambitious assignment. His

assignment to his students was to find a way to change the world and to put it
into action.

What is Trevor’s first act of paying it forward?

Trevor’s first act of paying it forward is to give a home to his ‘friend’. His
friend is a homeless man who startles Trevor’s mum when he is found in the
morning.

What things must you consider when helping people you do not know?

When helping people you don’t know, you must consider many things. Firstly,
you must consider if they will take advantage of you. For example, the man in
this movie could have easily taken advantage of Trevor and done something
illegal. Another thing you must consider is if they do need help.

What is the second ‘pay it forward’ act?

The second ‘pay it forward’ act is when Mr Thorsen’s daughter is admitted

into a hospital when her asthma worsens. Mr Thorsen and his daughter are
waiting patiently when a nurse comes in. Instead of treating the asthmatic
child, the nurse directly goes to a stranger who got stabbed. Mr Thorsen tries
to convince the nurse that his daughter's condition is worse, but the nurse
doesn’t listen. They start arguing, but the nurse doesn’t seem to care. Finally,
the stranger who got stabbed stands up and forces the nurse to attend to the
girl.
 What is Trevor’s idea?

Trevor's idea is straightforward yet effective. Trevor explained to the class

that if he helped 3 people, they would pay it forward by each helping 3
different people. If the cycle continues, it would hypothetically help many
people and make a difference in society.

What small things could you do to help?

Some small things I could do include the following: send someone a

handwritten note, make someone laugh, sign up to do voluntary work in your
community, donate blood, donate to charities, compliment someone and
giving words of encouragement.

Read John 15: 12 - What does this look like in action? Give three examples
According to John chapter 15 verse 12, god had commanded that we love one
another as he has loved us. To obey this command, we can pray for one
another. Another example is listening to others and being there when they are
in a time of misery and despair.

What act of kindness is in this clip?

In this clip, the wounded man from clip 3 is running from the police. As he is running, he
sees this woman driving her car right beside him. She looks at him and asks the man if he is
running from the police. The man replies yes and she signals for him to get in the car. She
drives past the cops unnoticed and transports the man to safety away from the police.

How does this link to previous acts of kindness? (Can you identify the chain?)

This links to the previous act of kindness as this event happened earlier. After the woman
saved the man, they stopped in the car and had a conversation about paying it forward.
Then after an unknown amount of time, the same man paid the act forward by helping the
young girl in the hospital.

What would a world look like if everyone gave up on kindness? List three ideas.

If people gave up on kindness, the world would be a negative place to live in. Everything
would be filled with bitterness and anger, full of people trying to get revenge. Everyone
would feel awful inside but no one would strive to resolve it due to the giving up on
kindness.
