Diesel Engine Used Oil Limits

The guidelines presented in this report are based on Chevron experience and adaptable
when OEM data is not available, otherwise always follow the OEM parameters as these
account for different engine types/design. The limits below are satisfactory up to 500
Hours oil drain intervals and up to B30 fuel.
Whilst these used oil condition parameters are a good guideline, we highly recommend
to also monitor the trend history of each machine for additional indication particular for
any sudden changes irrespective of the limits quote here.
Note that two identical machines may have quite different results due to different
conditions such as but not limited to loads, duty cycle, operating hours. Thus, trending is
an excellent complementary method to assess the machine's health.
Good sampling practices are also critical for consistent and accurate results, i.e. sample
in a clean environment, use correct sampling tools, etc.

Viscosity @100°C +/- 20% of typical new oil (ASTM D445)
Fuel Dilution 5%
Flash Point 180°C ASTM D3828
Soot 3% (FTIR)
TBN 3 (ASTM D2896) and must be above TAN
TAN 3 (ASTM D664)
Water 500ppm (Crackle or FTIR)
Iron 100ppm
Copper 50ppm
Chromium 25ppm
Aluminum 15ppm
Tin 15ppm
Lead 30ppm
Silicon 40ppm
