20G. Photochemistry
Photochemistry is the study of reactions that are initiated by light. In this topic we
explore mechanisms of photochemical reactions, with special emphasis on electron
and energy transfer processes.
Many chemical and biology processes, including photosynthesis and vision, can be
initiated by the absorption of electromagnetic radiation, so you need to know how to
include its effect in rate laws. You also need to see how to obtain insight into these
processes by the quantitative analysis of their mechanisms.
20G1. PHOTOCHEMICAL PROCESSES
An excited singlet state that decays to the ground state only via
the photophysical processes, where φf, φIC, and φp are the quantum
yields of fluorescence, internal conversion, and phosphorescence,
respectively.
The quantum yield of photon emission by fluorescence and
phosphorescence is φemission = φf + φp, which is less than 1.
