THE SCIENCE EXPERIENCE The University of Queensland JANUARY 18-20, 2011 Dear student I would like to congratulate you on your selection for The Science Experience (TSE) to be held at The University of Queensland from January 18 to 20, 2011. We have an interesting program organized which we trust you will find both enjoyable and stimulating. The University of Queensland Science Experience will be attended by 160 students from Queensland and Northern NSW and will give you the opportunity to meet and interact with scientists and fellow students. This letter is to provide you with details about The Science Experience that you will need to know before you arrive. You will receive a detailed program and further supplementary information when you arrive. Venue and Transport Details TSE will be held at the St Lucia campus of The University of Queensland, which is situated on a bend of the Brisbane River about 3 kilometres (as the crow flies or 8 kilometres by road) south-west of the city centre. Specifically, the activities will start each day in the Great Court with the first lectures starting in the Goddard Building (Building 8). The University of Queensland St Lucia campus is quite large. To ensure that you are able to promptly arrive at the assembly area (The Great Court), various meeting points are outlined here. At each meeting point, TSE staff (wearing white T-shirts and yellow hats) will be stationed to direct you to the Great Court. Please approach these staff when you arrive at the University. Students coming by car can be dropped off at Chancellors Place where staff will be stationed to meet you. If you are catching buses or trains to the city, the Brisbane City Council operates bus services (411, 412) from the city centre via Toowong to the University. The city buses leave from Adelaide Street in the city. These bus services coordinate with the metropolitan rail network services at Toowong. There are also four services from the Western suburbs: 432 from Kenmore, 427 from Chapel Hill, 428 and 414 from the Indooroopilly bus station. Please see the Translink website for more information (www.translink.com.au). Using the new Eleanor Schonell Bridge the Brisbane City Council operates buses on Route 109 between the City and UQ, via Cultural Centre, South Bank & Mater Hill busway stations. During TSE this will be the only bus operating on this route; however, the bridge is also a pedestrian and cycle bridge enabling people to easily reach The University of Queensland campus from Dutton Park.

There are also many buses that operate from Carindale (209), Mt Gravatt (169) and Logan (555 from Garden City); more information can be found on the Translink Website (www.translink.com.au). Alternatively, it is possible to travel to the University on the CityCat ferry. Students using this form of transport will be met at the University Ferry Terminal and escorted to the Assembly Area. We would like you to arrive by 8.30am on the Tuesday morning to give us the opportunity to greet you and distribute all the required information prior to the formal commencement of the program. Parents are not required to stay once students have been dropped off. On Wednesday and Thursday you should aim to arrive by 8.40am in time for the 9.00am start. On Tuesday afternoon you will be departing from The University of Queensland from 4.00pm. If you are being picked up from the University you will be escorted to the pickup point at Chancellors Place. If required you can also be escorted to the bus stop, CityCat Ferry Terminal or Eleanor Schonell Bridge bus stop. Please advise us on the desired pick up points on the attached transport forms. On Wednesday night you will be dismissed from the Supernova social at 9.15 pm. The Supernova is being held at Centenary High School, Moolanda Street, Jindalee. Buses will take students from their activities directly to the Centenary High School Supernova; however, students will need to be picked up directly from this important social event as there will be no transport back to UQ and there is limited public transport. There will be no parking in the school grounds and the students will be walked across the oval from the Sports and Recreation Centre to the parent pick up zone adjacent to Yallambee Road. Parents are advised to street park in local streets and walk up to the pick-up zone to be matched with their children (a map of Centenary High School will be included in your satchel on the first day). Please note that the disco is an integral part of the program and all students are expected to attend. The programme finishes with a special keynote lecture/presentation at the Southbank Institute of Technology, timed to finish at 4.00 pm. The closing ceremony commences at 2pm and one Parent/Guardian is invited to attend. There is no parking on campus at Southbank Institute of Technology; however, there is on-street parking around the campus which is patrolled by the Brisbane City Council. Alternatively, paid parking is available at Southbank Parklands and the Brisbane Convention Centre, both within walking distance. In terms of public transport, YSA staff will escort students travelling by public transport to Southbank Railway Station and Southbank Busway Station. Students who neither have parents in attendance nor intend to catch public transport will be released from the Closing Ceremony to walk to a location you have agreed upon with your child (NB: students will not be escorted to parents/cars by staff). Please indicate your planned method of transport on the transport forms provided.

To assist us in ensuring your safety, we ask that you fill in the accompanying transport & other details form. The form must be returned on the first day of the experience. If the form is not received at your registration on Tuesday, your guardian/s will have to be contacted by telephone regarding your transport plans. If you require directions on the UQ campus please see http://www.uq.edu.au/maps/ and the UQ Parking Guide for your parents. Programme The programme will involve lectures, workshops, excursions, and some social activities. You will be allocated to a group, and a detailed program for each group will be distributed on the first day. A parent/guardian must sign the attached consent form to enable you to participate in the anatomy session. Transport to all excursion activities will be via buses that will be arranged by The Science Experience staff. On Wednesday the Young Scientists of Australia staff organize a BBQ dinner and disco (Supernova) at Centenary High School, Jindalee. The Supernova is a very important social event within The Science Experience program as it provides students with the opportunity to interact with students attending TSE at other tertiary institutions in Brisbane. The Supernova will be attended by students participating in TSE at The University of Queensland, Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology. We will have a Queensland Police presence at the Supernova to ensure security and St Johns Ambulance Service will have staff on site throughout the event. The Supernova will finish at 9.15 pm. The disco is an integral part of the program, therefore if you intend leaving before the disco, or earlier than the proposed finishing time, you will need to bring a letter from your parent/guardian describing your proposed movements. We hope that all students will attend this enjoyable social event. The food provided will cater for vegetarian and other diets but please let us know of any special dietary requirements to ensure that we have enough available. Please hand all notes in on Tuesday at registration. On Thursday the program finishes with a special combined lecture/presentation at the South Bank Institute of Technology, South Bank. It begins at 2pm and will finish by 4.00pm. It may take 15 minutes after the ceremony to enable all attending to leave the venue and move off to their arranged transport. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend this event. Please RSVP on the enclosed transport form. What to bring: We suggest that you wear comfortable casual clothing and proper shoes. Fully enclosed shoes (joggers preferably but not ballet shoes, sandals or other semi enclosed casual shoes) are compulsory for the Experience because students will be visiting laboratories where strict Occupational Health and Safety regulations operate. For safety reasons, several excursions require long pants or trousers and sleeved shirts (short sleeves only required - sleeveless singlets are not acceptable). If your normal casual wear does not conform to this, it is recommended that you bring

slacks/jeans with you so that you can change if necessary. Attention girls - stiletto heels are not permitted at the Supernova venue. You will be provided with a TSE satchel, but you should bring a note pad and pen(cil) if you wish to take notes. You should bring lunch and morning tea with you on all three days. There will be no free time available to purchase food. A sausage sizzle will be provided on Wednesday evening prior to the Supernova. Students should also bring a water bottle, hat and wear sunscreen. Competitions Each year we organize competitions that are run in conjunction with The Science Experience. On Tuesday you will take part in the Great Australian Science Relay Quiz organized by the Young Scientists of Australia. A cartoon caption competition will also be included in your student booklets; appropriate prizes will be awarded at the end of the program. Emergencies In case of emergency during The Science Experience, messages can be sent through the office of the Faculty of Science on (07) 3365-1888. To contact TSE YSA staff, please phone Jessica Wrigley on 0401 080 168 or Ian Pettigrew on 0418 250 781 If you have any known medical or allergy problem, please bring a note describing the condition, its likely effects, and any course of action that might have to be taken. Hand this note to your group leader on arrival. We look forward to meeting you in January and we are sure that you will have a most memorable experience. Should you have any questions or problems related to the School, you may contact me directly at The University of Queensland (07) 3365 3255 or in my absence, Jackie Mergard on (07) 3365 3634. Yours sincerely
