Baduy
They are known for their strict adherence to their traditions and their rejection of modern
technology. The Baduy people are divided into two main groups:
Inner Baduy (Kanekes Dalam): This is the more traditional group, and they live in three
villages: Cibeo, Cikertawana, and Cikeusik. The Inner Baduy people avoid contact with
outsiders and strictly follow their ancestral customs. They live a simple life, farming rice
and vegetables using traditional methods,

Outer Baduy (Kanekes Luar): The Outer Baduy people are more open to contact with
outsiders, and they live in 22 villages located around the Inner Baduy villages. They still
follow many traditional customs, but they are more willing to adopt modern
conveniences such as electricity and generators.
Social Structure: Baduy society is hierarchical, with a Puun (leader) at the head. The
Puun is responsible for making decisions about the community and resolving conflicts.
Livelihood: The Baduy people are subsistence farmers, and they grow rice, vegetables,
and fruits. They also raise chickens and goats.
Clothing: The Baduy people wear simple clothing made from hand-loomed fabric. The
Inner Baduy people wear dark blue clothing, while the Outer Baduy people wear a wider
variety of colors.
Housing: Baduy houses are simple structures made from bamboo and palm leaves. They
have no furniture, and the people sleep on the floor on mats.
Taboos: The Baduy people have many taboos, such as not being allowed to wear shoes,
use umbrellas, or eat certain foods.
The Baduy people are a fascinating culture that has managed to preserve its traditions for
centuries. However, their way of life is increasingly under threat from the outside world. The
Indonesian government is trying to balance the needs of development with the need to protect the
Baduy culture.
