Mirroring

Listening carefully and then reflecting back what the student has said to show understanding.

Alex: [sighs] I'm just feeling really overwhelmed with everything right now.

Ms. Davis: [M - Mirroring (Reflective Listening)] I hear you saying that you’re feeling overwhelmed by
the workload. Is that correct?

Open-Ended Questions
Using questions that encourage students to express themselves more fully.

Alex: Yeah, it's just too much. Between my classes, the upcoming exams, and all the extracurricular
activities, I don't know how to handle it all.

Ms. Davis: [O - Open-Ended Questions] That sounds like a lot on your plate. How did that situation make
you feel?

Mindfulness
Being aware and present, showing understanding and sharing the feelings of the student.

Alex: [pauses] Honestly, it makes me feel really stressed out. Like I can't catch a break.

Ms. Davis: [M - Mindfulness (Empathy)] It sounds like you’re really stressed about the upcoming
exams. That’s completely understandable.
Empowering Students
Supporting and motivating students to take charge of their own decisions and actions.

Alex: Exactly. And it feels like no matter how much I study, it's never enough.

Ms. Davis: [E - Encouragement (Empowering Students)] I believe in your ability to handle this. What
steps do you think you can take to improve the situation?

Non-Verbal Communication
Using body language, facial expressions, and other non-verbal cues to communicate effectively.

Alex: Well, I guess I could try to create a more structured study schedule. But I'm not sure where to
start.

Ms. Davis: [N - Non-Verbal Communication] [Maintains eye contact, nods, and leans forward slightly]
That sounds like a good plan. Let's work on that together.

Trust Building
Establishing a reliable and safe relationship where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and
feelings.

Alex: Okay, that would be helpful.

Ms. Davis: [T - Trust Building] I’m here to support you, and I want you to feel safe talking to me about
anything. We can tackle this one step at a time.
Summarizing/Paraphrasing
Condensing what the student has said into a shorter version to confirm understanding.

Alex: Thanks, Ms. Davis. That means a lot.

Ms. Davis: [S - Summarizing and Paraphrasing] So, what you’re saying is that you’re finding it difficult
to balance your studies with extracurricular activities. Is that right?

Alex: Yes, that's right.

Ms. Davis: Let's start by looking at your current schedule and see where we can make some adjustments
to help you manage your time better. We’ll make sure you have enough time for both studying and
relaxing.

Alex: That sounds like a plan. Thanks for helping me figure this out.
