Pre-Bolting Verification Checklist

This checklist shall be completed before mobilizing elevated work platform to node location for bolting activities.
❑ Aerial lift has the tools and hardware for bolting operations organized with sufficient room and access in basket.
❑ Bolt, Washer, DTI, and Nut Assemblies
❑ Bolt assemblies shall be inspected for grease and rust; refer to this page for specific requirements.
Safety Note:
One bolt assembly has a mass of 4.72 lbmass [2.14 kg]; 32 bolt assemblies (sufficient for one XL300 node) has a mass of 151.04 lbmass [68.48 kg]. Limit the number of bolt
assemblies brought aboard to not exceed elevated work platform’s weight limit.

❑ Skidmore test has been performed to confirm protrusions on DTIs do not compress prematurely prior to achieving proper bolt tension.
❑ Verify that pump has electrical connectivity and is properly grounded.
❑ Verify hydraulic oil level in the oil tank is between the minimum mark and the maximum mark; do not mix different grades of hydraulic oil.
❑ Verify that connection between pump and hydraulic torque is secure without leaks. Detailed hose connection instructions are available in the
respective hydraulic torque wrenches’ manual. Below are the important steps & safety considerations:
• System must be depressurized prior to connecting the hydraulic hoses to the pump and torque wrench.
• Hose couplings must be free of dirt, grime, and debris prior to connection; clean with a lint-free cloth.
• There must be no clearance between male and female couplings on the hydraulic hoses; tool will not operate if hose is loose, damaged, or
deformed.
❑ The hex socket is securely fitted onto the hydraulic wrench’s square drive retainer; reaction arm is present and secured to wrench’s body.
❑ A sufficient amount of hex inserts are present. One insert can support bolting up to 10 XL300 nodes.

Node Fastener Installation – Hardware Inspection & Testing

This page and the next page summarize the requirements for Skidmore testing XL300 node fastener assemblies onsite. This
document does not cover Skidmore testing fastener assemblies of other sizes such as those used in gravity connections; this
document also does not cover detailed Skidmore testing instructions as this is not a ConXtech-specific process.
Refer to this page for how ConXtech sets up the Skidmore Test.
1. A minimum of three complete node fastener assemblies of each combination (refer below) to be used in the work shall be checked at site of
installation in a tension calibrator. This procedure verifies that the DTIs do not squirt prematurely prior to reaching the minimum bolt tension
required (refer to next page)
• Fastener Type: Fastener type differs between socket head cap screw (XL300-HD) and hex head screw (XL300)
• Fastener Diameter: All XL300 node fasteners have identical diameter; there should be no variation.
• Fastener Length: All XL300 node fasteners have identical length; there should be no variation.
• Fastener Grade: All XL300 node fasteners have identical grade; there should be no variation
• Fastener Lot: The definition of “lot” may vary per national, state, and local regulations, codes, standards, and practices.
2. Install the node fastener components onto the Skidmore device with applicable adaptor plates and bushings. Refer to schematics and the
tension calibrator’s instruction manual for proper component installation. All requirements such as lubrication and DTI direction from previous
page still applies.

3. Once all node fastener components are installed in the Skidmore, snug-tighten by turning the cap screw’s head using appropriate wrench while
restraining Nut from turning.
• For an XL300-HD socket head cap screw, this will require a wrench outfitted with a ¾” hex insert to turn the cap screw; a 2” spud wrench
may be used to restrain the hex nut from turning.
• For an XL300 hex head screw, this requires the same tool as an XL300-HD SHCS, but the hydraulic wrench needs to be outfitted with a 2”
allen socket; the 2” spud wrench is used to restrain the bolt head (not hex nut) from turning.
4. Tighten fastener assembly until the tension value read on Skidmore calibrator gauge is equal to or greater 1.05 times minimum bolt tension
specified in table below. This value is 107 kips [476 kN] for a 1.25” bolt; This is a requirement per ASTM F959/F959M.
• All ASTM A574 socket head cap screws shall be treated as ASTM A490 bolts. The 107 kips [476 kN] is derived by multiplying the
specified minimum bolt tension of an 1.25” ASTM A490 bolt by a factor of 1.05. Once tightened, note appearance, flow volume and number
of squirts from DTI. An XL300 (Type 490) DTI has eight protrusions.
• Acceptance Criteria: There should be at least seven protrusions that squirted from DTI.
5. After fastener assembly has been pretensioned, insert feeler gauge into half of the spaces, in between DTI washer and hex nut.
• For non-coated DTIs (non-galvanized application): use a 0.015” feeler gauge; metric equivalent feeler gauges are not permitted.
• For coated DTIs (galvanized application): use a 0.005” feeler gauge; metric equivalent feeler gauges are not permitted.
• Acceptance Criteria: Feeler gauge is refused in at least four spaces.

Insert a feeler gauge into half of the

spaces, in between DTI washer and hex
nut and confirm they are refused.

Node Fastener Installation – Installation Order & Bolt Orientation

This page illustrates the order at which bolt assemblies are installed on a node. Beams welded onto Outer Collars are not shown for clarity
of illustration. Keep in mind this is only installation; the torque wrench is not required at this stage.
- Prior to installing bolts, inspect bolt hole alignment and confirm that the shear bolts have been installed on all four outer collars.
- Respect the bolt and nut orientation shown in images below.
- Alternate bolt and nut orientation between adjacent levels of nut; this allows the hydraulic wrench to access the bolts during tensioning operations.
- Snug tight the bolts by hand.
Bolt orientation alternates between levels. This
applies equally to both XL300 and XL300-HD

Node Fastener Installation – Installation Order & Bolt Orientation

This page illustrates the order at which bolt assemblies are installed on a node. Beams welded onto Outer Collars are not shown for clarity
of illustration. Keep in mind this is only installation; the torque wrench is not required at this stage.
- Left Image: Letters A, B, C, and D below show an example of bolt installation sequence that tightens opposite corners 180° apart first, then shifts
90° to do the remaining two corners. This sequence does not need to be followed exactly; it is a recommendation.
- Note: Due to building characteristics and type of elevated work platform, it is often more expedient to install bolt assemblies in either a
clockwise or anti-clockwise manner, contrary to executing an opposite corner installation.
- Right Image: is a reminder of node hardware order of installation (reference this page again for requirements). Deviation from order of
component installation shown is not permitted under any circumstance. Washers must be installed on the machine surfaces of Outer Collars;
DTI’s protrusions must be nut-facing. The numbered assemblies are a recommendation of installation sequence (not to be confused with the node
hardware’s order of installation that is specific to how washers, DTI, nut, and bolt is arranged.

Node Fastener Torqueing – Hydraulic Wrench Reaction Arm Position

This page illustrates possible positions of the wrench’s reaction arm; similar images are in subsequent pages where hydraulic wrenches
are required to torque the bolts to their requirements.
- Each reaction arm’s position relative to the body of the wrench is accompanied by an image of a clock; the hand on the clock will correspond to the
reaction arm’s position and is written in red in subsequent pages.
- The reaction arm’s position can be easily changed by first
removing the arm, orienting it in desired position, followed by re-
inserting the arm; the locking lever (not-shown) must be shown to
secure position of reaction arm.
- Refer to subsequent pages for reaction arm configuration for
each bolt; configuration will differ between XL300 & XL300-

Node Fastener Torqueing – Hydraulic Wrench & Pump Operation

This page contains written instructions on how to operate the hydraulic wrench and pump units properly in sequential order. All
instructions here apply to subsequent pages where hydraulic wrench is required.
1. Start the pump unit and set the torque. Refer to this page for the entire range of torque values corresponding to pressure gauge readout on pump.
The recommended starting torque is 1,024 ft-lbs [1,389 Nm] at 3,200 psi. Set the pressure with the control valve; this is “A” on bottom right image
below.
2. Install the hydraulic wrench into the node fastener being turned; the hex insert must be fully inserted into the bolt head’s hex socket.
• Confirm the disengagement lever is at the “Engaged” position on image below.
3. Follow instructions in subsequent pages to position the reaction arm onto the collar flange
4. Install wedge in between nuts to keep them from turning when torqueing with the hydraulic wrench.
5. Press and hold the “B” button on the pump’s remote until visual DTI squirt verification is present. If the tool no longer turns before the DTIs
squirt, increase the pressure output on the pump’s control valve. Number of squirts should be equal to number of DTI protrusions less one, unless
verification of squirt is visually impossible. Follow criteria outlined on the Node Inspection page.
6. Once bolts are fully tensioned, move the disengagement lever to the “Disengaged” position and remove wrench.

Torque Chart for Hydraulic Wrench
This page contains the torque chart for hydraulic wrench used in XL300 node fastening applications; note that the chart applies similarly to
ENERPAC’s S3000X and HYTORC’s MXT-3-SA. The manufacturer’s torque charts are also linked below.
- The torque required to squirt DTIs on the XL300 node fastener assembly is estimated to be 1,500 ft-lbs [2,034 Nm]; this corresponds to a pressure
readout of ~4,800 PSI [~ 33 MPa] on the pump’s pressure gauge. Note that torque values do not always correspond to bolting tension in the
connection. Visual confirmation of DTI squirts are always required, as outlined in Node Inspection.
- Higher torques up to 2,250 ft-lbs [3,051 Nm] may be required in positions where the wrench’s reaction arm has poor engagement with the
reacting surface. The operating range of bolting XL300 nodes is highlighted below.

Node Inspection
This page contains inspection criteria for XL300 nodes that have been tensioned with a hydraulic wrench. Inspection requirements are
similar to those mentioned previously on Node Fastener Installation – Hardware Inspection & Testing section. They are restated here for
convenience.
- Once the cap screw has been tightened, note the appearance, flow, volume, and number of squirts from DTI.
- Acceptance Criteria: There should be at least seven protrusions that squirted from DTI.
- In the event of non-squirts, visually inspect the DTI spaces to identify if protrusions have been compressed; Improper squirt indication can be due to
the following factors
- There is a thick bed of grease concealing squirt feature
- Squirt material may fall off due to natural elements such as wind and rain.
- Acceptance Criteria: When seven squirts cannot be identified, but the bolted connection is believed to have met pretension requirements,
inspect with a feeler gauge as connection allows. Refusal at four DTI’s spaces indicates a conforming pretension.
• For non-coated DTIs (non-galvanized application): use a 0.015” feeler gauge; metric equivalent feeler gauges are not permitted.
• For coated DTIs (galvanized application): use a 0.005” feeler gauge; metric equivalent feeler gauges are not permitted.
• Corrective Action: If connection fails acceptance criteria, the inspector is allowed to request additional tests to determine whether
the bolt has been correctly tensioned. ConXtech’s field crew may be requested to inspect the connection with a calibrated hydraulic
torque wrench.

Reference Images – Skidmore Tension Calibrator Test Setup
Video on the right side of this page demonstrates the setup of a Skidmore Test with Skidmore
Wilhelm’s Model HS Portable Bolt-Tension Calibrator. Important Notes below:
- This test requires at least 2 personnel:
- One operator is torqueing bolt head with a hydraulic wrench
- One operator is using a pipe wrench to prevent nut from turning
- Reaction Plate is at least 1” [25 mm] in thickness, and is modified (through grinding / cutting)
to provide a reaction post / point for the wrench’s reaction arm
- The tension calibrator needs to be mounted on a rigid, immobile surface such as wide-flange
column; in the video and images on this page, the device is seen mounted on a telescopic
forklift’s carriage.
