MEDIEVAL PERIOD AND GREGORIAN CHANT

Medieval period also called Middle Ages/Dark Ages, flourished from 400 to 1450. It lasted
from the 5th to 15th century. It was also the period when the Christian Church became heavily involved in
secular society in Western world, attaining enormous influence in their politics, culture, and the arts.
The center of musical activity during the Middle Ages was dominated by the Roman Catholic
Church.Singing for the church liturgy was considered an important profession in various
monasteries. There were instruments during this period, most music was vocal and performed a
capella or without instrumental accompaniment.

Gregorian Chant
Referred to as plainchant or plainsong, the Gregorian Chant is the official sacred music of the Roman
Catholic Church for over 1000 years.
Text-setting of the Gregorian Chant
Texting-setting is the relationship between the melody of the chant and the text.
These is divided into 3 classifications:
 Syllabic - one syllable of the text is set to one note of the chant melody.
 Neumatic - one syllable of the text is set to a few notes of the chant melody.
 Melismatic - one syllable of the text is set to many melodic notes of the chant.

Characteristics of Gregorian Chant

The Gregorian chant has the following characteristics:
 Usually performed without instrumental accompaniment or acapella
 Monophonic texture
 Sung in Latin
 Unmetered (e.g., stepping melodic contour with few skips)
 Modal (e.g., based on church modes)

The Roman Mass

Gregorian chant melodies are used to compose the different parts of the Mass. The Mass is divided into two
main parts:
 Proper - includes the six sections that use music such as the introit, gradual, alleluia, tract. Offertory, &
communion.
 Ordinary - contains the constant portions of the Mass that includes Kyrie (Lord, have mercy on us),
