Examples of different epics in the Philippines

Labaw Donggon
Region: Panay (Western Visayas)

The protagonist of Panay's epic poem "Hinilawod," which originates in the Western
Visayas region of the Philippines, is Labaw Donggon. This epic, an important work of oral
Hiligaynon literature, describes the amazing exploits and triumphs of Labaw Donggon, a
hero descended from the gods. Labaw Donggon is a central figure in the Panay epic
tradition, known for his strength, wisdom, and adventures that involve battling monsters,
wooing princesses, and establishing his kingdom.

Through oral tradition, the narrative of Labaw Donggon has been passed down
through the years. In order to guarantee that the "Hinilawod" continues to be an essential
component of the Hiligaynon people's cultural legacy, efforts are made to record and
conserve it. The heroic journey of Labaw Donggon, which is replete with setbacks,

"Sandayo" epic narrates the enthralling story of the brave warrior Sandayo. Sandayo, who
embodies the qualities and ideals of the Subanen civilization, is well-known for his
superhuman skills. He goes on multiple missions to defend his people and maintain

justice.The Sandayo epic of the Subanen people tells the story of the hero Sandayo, who
possesses supernatural abilities and undertakes various quests to protect his people.

Through oral tradition, the Sandayo legend has been passed down from seniors to
younger members of the community, preserving the epic tales for future generations.
Future generations will be inspired and instructed by the ideals and lessons included in
Sandayo's story thanks to this transmission. The epic, which represents the Subanen
people's tenacity and enduring spirit, continues to be a fundamental part of their cultural
legacy.
