I. Definition of Terms:
1. SIMPL APPREHENSION
o Act of the mind to grasp essence of a thing
2. SYLLOGISM
o Verbal symbol of an inference made up of 3 propositions: 2
premises & a conclusion
3. EDUCTION
o Formulation of new proposition by interchange of subject &
predicate with the use of negatives
4. PHANTASM
o Product of imagination
5. IDEA
o Intellectual representation of a thing; product of simple
apprehension
6. IDIOGENESIS
o Intellectual evolution
o The human mind operates thru sensation, imagination,
apprehension then verbalization.
7. LOGICAL
o Supposition of terms is present when the term expresses an aspect
of concept itself as it exist only in the mind.
8. METAPHORICAL
o Supposition of terms is present when the term signifies something
by analogy ( comparison)
9. CATEGORICAL PROPOSITION
o Basic unit of an argument; simplest form with subject, predicate &
copula
o Verbal expression o something which is perceived as true.
10. COMPREHENSION
o Sum total of all the essential notes grasped by the mind in an idea
11. TERMS
o A sensible representation of a thing
12. CONCRETE
o When an idea expresses something which has sensible attributes
or capable of being perceived by the senses
13. CONVERSION
o Rephrasing of the truth of a given proposition by interchanging
subject & predicate
14. JUDGMENT
o 2nd mental operation which is mental act of affirming or denying the
relationship between 2 concepts
15. EXTENSION
o Property of a term- sum total of real things to which concept is
used.
16. UNIVERSAL
o It represents each member of a class; applies to all members of a
given group with quantifiers like all, every, each, none, no one,
whatever
17. COLLECTIVE
o When an idea represents a # of things constituting unit-groups like
herd, choir.
18. UNIVOCAL
o A term that carries only one fixed meaning o comprehension
19. EQUIVOCAL
o A term having 2 or several unrelated meanings
20. WISDOM
o Correct application of knowledge
II. Review LOGICAL, REAL, METAPHORICAL, MATERIAL,
IMAGINARY MEANINGS
III. Review A, E, I, O propositions- Review its quantifiers
IV. Review EDUCTION: Formula for Conversion, Obversion,
Contraposition & Inversion. You would just indicate whether its
VALID or INVALID.
V. SYLLOGISM: Review the 4 kinds= Hypothetical ( IF);
Disjunctive ( either, neither); Enthymeme (Whatever, Every);
Categorical Syllogism ( Strictly uses the formula)
