Examining the knowledge and attitudes of undergraduate nursing students

about handwashing practice

Research Questions:
What is the the level of knowledge and attitudes of undergraduate nursing students about
handwashing practice

Introduction:
Hand washing is one of the seven golden -standard precautions that are advocated to
minimize and control hospital acquired infection (Centre for Disease Control, 2017), and it is
most effective method of preventing the spread of microorganisms (World Health
Organization, 2009). Undergraduate nursing students are the future nursing workforce and
are undertaking a substantial part of the care delivered to the patient every day, and
therefore they play a critical role in controlling the spread of hospital acquired infection in
clinical setting. There are diverse factors which impact on undergraduate nursing student’
compliance with the effective hand washing practice, including perceived risk of infection,
and gender, with female students having significantly higher level of knowledge related to
the importance of hand hygiene and associated risk of spreading infection in hospital setting

Search Strategy:
Relevant studies were search using one database: CINAHL. The initial search was conducted
for the period between 2018-2023, The search used keyword: “knowledge”,“handwashing”,
“students”. Papers were included if they were peer reviewed, published in English and
primarily related to the issue of handwashing practice among nursing students. Published
papers were searched between 2021 – 2023. Three papers were taken for further data
extraction.
