6.1.1.2 (Addition) Note 2: This is the appropriate design for most LyondellBasell applications.
There are circumstances, such as unresolved pipe strain or high speeds, where a stationary
flexible element would improve reliability. Review Annex F.5 to determine if a stationary
flexible element should be specified.

6.1.1.3 (Addition) Note 2: This is the appropriate design for most LyondellBasell applications.
There are circumstances, such as high solids in the process, where a rotating flexible
element would improve reliability. Review Annex F.5 to determine if a rotating flexible
element should be specified.

6.1.2 Seal Chamber and Gland Plate

6.1.2.4.1 (Addition) For Category 1 seals in ASME B73.1 pumps, large bore seal chambers shall be
used whenever possible. Taper bored seal chambers with axial flow modifiers can be used
for clean pumping services with 10% or less solids content by weight.

6.1.2.5 (Addition) Note: The default decision is that the pump manufacturer will provide the
traditional seal chamber arrangement. This is the appropriate decision for the vast
majority of LyondellBasell applications. For more advanced seal designs that require a
cartridge canister gland and sleeeve arrangement, the externally mounted seal chamber
arrangement may be required. The externally mounted seal chamber would be provided
by the seal manufacturer.

6.1.2.14 (Addition) Note 2: Maintaining proper vapor pressure margin (VPM) in the seal chamber
is an important consideration for reliable seal life. Annex F.1.4 of API 682 is a very good
resource for understanding different design options that are available for maintaining
VPM.

6.1.2.14.3 (Addition) The Seller shall provide the curves or other data that show the seal chamber
pressure for the entire range of pump operation. This data should be obtained from the
pump manufacturer for new pump purchases. LyondellBasell will obtain the chamber
pressure data for seal retrofits to existing pumps.

6.1.2.16 (Addition) Note 2: Close clearance floating throat bushings are typically used on API Plan
32 applications, where the single seal needs to be isolated from the pumpage. A 16 ft/sec
(5 m/sec) flow velocity at the throat of the seal chamber is necessary to ensure complete
isolation. A floating throat bushing allows for tighter concentric bushing clearances to
help maintain 16 ft/sec (5 m/sec).

6.1.2.18.1 (Substitution) PTFE (Teflon) tape pipe sealant and/or anti-seize lubricants are forbidden to
be used to make up any threaded connections. An acceptable alternative to Teflon tape is
Loctite 567 or other equivalent and approved products.

(Addition) Note: Loose PTFE (Teflon) tape fibers can cause problems in hydraulic and
pneumatic systems. Anti-seize lubricants are not a sealing compound and are not
acceptable pipe joint compounds.

6.1.3 Cartridge Seal Sleeves

6.1.3.14 (Substitution) Seal designs that utilize seven or more setscrews to drive and/or axially
position the shaft require approval by LyondellBasell.

6.1.3.15 (Substitution) For seal applications where the pumped fluid is flammable or toxic, and seal
chamber pressures exceed 200 psi (15 bar), the seal sleeve shall be axially fixed by a split
ring engaged in a shaft groove (Figure 22), or a shrink disc (Figure 21).

6.1.3.16 (Addition) When specified, shaft sleeves shall be coated with chromium oxide at the
secondary seal, throat bushing, and throttle bushing wear areas. The chromium oxide
coating shall be 0.010 to 0.015 in. (0.25 to 0.38 mm) in thickness after final machining of the
sleeve.

6.1.4 Mating Rings

6.1.4.1 (Decision) Clamped seal faces shall not be used.

6.1.6 Materials

6.1.6.5 Secondary Seals

6.1.6.5.1 (Substitution) Unless otherwise specified, material selection for secondary seals (O-rings)
shall be made using LyondellBasell EG 3501. The normal default O-ring material is
fluoroelastomer, within the operating temperature and chemical compatibility limits listed
in EG 3501.

Note: Propylene oxide and ethylene oxide services require very specific grades of
perfluoroelastomer compounds. LyondellBasell EG 3501 shall be consulted for the proper
elastomer selection for oxide service.

6.1.6.7 Gland Plates

6.1.6.7.2 (Substitution) Material selection for the gland plate to seal chamber sealing element shall
be an O-ring selected using LyondellBasell EG 3501. The default O-ring material shall be
fluoroelastomer for operating temperatures up to 150°C (300°F). Graphite-filled type 304

stainless steel spiral wound gaskets shall be the default selection for operating
temperatures greater than 150°C (300°F).

7.0 SPECIFIC SEAL CONFIGURATIONS

7.1 Arrangement 1 Seals

7.1.2 Seal Chamber and Gland Plate

7.1.2.7 (Modification) Seal systems that utilize internal circulating devices, such as a pumping ring,
and rely on the rotation of the mechanical seal to maintain circulation shall be designed
with the inlet at the bottom of the seal and the outlet at the top of the seal as space allows.
Where possible, the outlet for a radial internal pumping device should be tangential to the
axis of rotation to improve pumping efficiency.

(Addition) Note 2: Where possible, the outlet for a radial internal pumping device should
be tangential to the axis of rotation to improve pumping efficiency.

(Addition) Note 3: When adequate axial space is available, an axial internal pumping
device should be used. The axial pumping device provides better head versus flow
characteristics.

7.2 Arrangement 2 Seals

7.2.1 General

7.2.1.2 (Addition) Note 2: Specifying a noncontacting inner (primary) seal requires careful
consideration, and complete understanding of the process fluid. Only fluids that are close
to vapor pressure are suitable for noncontacing inner seals.

(Addition) Note 3: Even with noncontacting inner seals, an API Plan 11 (cooling) is required
for services that polymerize, like ethylene, to prevent polymer build up in the seal chamber
and on seal components.

8.0 ACCESSORIES

8.1 General

8.1.7 (Modification) Unless otherwise specified, all components for piping plans listed in
Table 4 and in the column “Process-Flush-Buffer-Barrier” shall be the same material as the
seal gland or one with superior corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. For further
information about suitable metals, refer to Table B.1. As a minimum, the external
barrier/buffer fluid reservior shall be stainless steel.

8.2 Piping for Seal Auxiliary Systems

8.2.22 (Decision) Sight flow indicators shall be used in each cooling water outlet line.

8.3 Components of Seal Auxiliary Systems (if Specified in Annex G)

8.3.2 Coolers

8.3.2.1 General

8.3.2.1.13 (Addition) The sealing system shall be equipped with a cooler when the calculated
temperature of the fluid leaving the seal is greater than 150°F (65°C), or when specified by
the seal manufacturer.

8.3.6 Barrier/Buffer Fluid Reservoirs and Accumulators

8.3.6.1 General

8.3.6.1.6 (Addition) Note: The method for refilling the barrier/buffer fluid reservoirs while
pressurized and in operation needs to be considered. A couple of examples would be a
centralize system or a portable reservior with a hand pump. For new plants, a centralized
pressurized distribution system, permanently connected to the seal reservoirs, could be
considered. The central systems need appropriate controls to regulate pressure, control
fill rate from the system to the reservoir, and prevent backflow from the reservoirs to the
central system. For non-centralized systems, the portable reservior, using a hand pump
for make up, is a practical arrangement. The hand pump should include a check valve to
prevent backflow, and should be connected to the seal reservoir using a hose or removable
spool piece with a "non-checked" quick connect. Whatever arrangement the plant site
utilizes for refilling, the appropriate hardware needs to be included in the reservior design.

8.3.6.1.7 (Addition) Note 1: Internal circulating devices integral to the seal are preferred to external
circulating pumps and/or external flush fluid supply. The seal manufacturer shall review
each seal application and determine if external circulation or external supply is required,
and state the reason (such as the need for increased cooling) for the requirement.

(Addition) Note 2: Review Annex F.3 carefully to understand the relationship between
internal circulating devices and reservoir piping layout.

8.3.6.1.9 (Decision) The seal manufacturer shall review the barrier/buffer fluid selection and
comment on the effect of the selection on seal operating life.
