Methodology

This chapter discussed the research methodology and technique, the locale of
the study, data gathering instruments and procedures, and the statistical
treatment of data used in the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

1
The process began with the development of instruments such as
comprehension level assessments and questionnaires to capture relevant
2
information on students' comprehension levels. The researchers presented
these instruments to their research adviser for corrections and suggestions.
2
Subsequently, the instruments were validated by a group of experts, consisting

of five English teachers, and one statistician, to measure the content validity of
the instruments used.
Once approved, the researchers secured permission through a formal letter
from the campus executive director, the college dean, and the program
chairperson of BSHM and BSTM for the approval to conduct a pilot test,
52 4 5 2
comprehension assessment and the experiment of the study. A pilot test was
6 2 7
conducted among 80 students of BSHM and BSTM. After data were gathered,
53
the statistician analyzed it to test the validity and reliability of the
2
questionnaire. Then, researchers revised the questionnaire and applied it to the
2
respondents. After the succession of administering comprehension
8
assessment and the next procedure to begin the three (3) phases of the
2
experimental intervention. Below is the flow of the activities made by the
researchers.

Research Design
52 12
Experimental quantitative research design involved comparing two or more
groups in a controlled environment to assess the effects of a manipulated
53 2
variable. This design aimed to determine causation by isolating and controlling
2
variables, typically using random assignment. One influential figure in research
design, Donald T. Campbell, emphasized the importance of experimental
2
methods. He stated, "Only experiments can yield the information needed to
infer causality." Campbell's work underscored the significance of experimental
2
designs in establishing causal relationships in research. This study involved
14 14 13,14
two groups of respondents that had an exposure to short movies without
subtitles and another with English subtitles.

Locale of the Study

15
The study was conducted at Pangasinan State University-Alaminos City
16 17
Campus (PSU-ACC), which was located at Barangay Bolaney, Alaminos City,

the classroom was well-ventilated and lighted.

Before proceeding with the actual experimentation, participants completed a
21
questionnaire addressing their demographic details and with comprehension

assessment. The questionnaire assessed the level of comprehension skills of
22
the respondents.
23
After the administration of comprehension assessment, the next procedure is

made between the controlled group and the experimental group. The process
54 31 30
comprised three phases for the actual experiment which catered for five days
depending on the availability of the respondents.
