1. Language Comprehension Difficulties
❒❒ The student avoids unfamiliar tasks due to difficulties understanding the language of the new directions.

2. Deficits in Expressive Communication Skills


❒❒ The student lacks the communication skills necessary to express frustration and ask for help, resulting in challenging
behavior.

3. Anxiety, Fear, and Emotional Regulation Difficulties


❒❒ 3a: The student generally has a strong desire to please others and gets distressed when unfamiliar or difficult tasks are
presented due to intense worries about doing the work incorrectly.
❒❒ 3b: The student is able to engage in familiar tasks that are repeated daily, but the student is unable to get started due to
anxiety and fear when presented with something that is out of the ordinary or does not follow a familiar pattern.

4. Social Skills Deficits


❒❒ 4a: Some unfamiliar tasks require using social skills that the student has not yet acquired.
❒❒ 4b: Social reciprocity difficulties may lead to problems interacting in the long chains of back-and-forth exchanges with
the teacher that are often required to succeed with an unfamiliar or difficult task.

5. Sensory Processing Problems


❒❒ The student has difficulties engaging in tasks that include unfamiliar sensory experiences.

6. Executive Functioning Challenges


❒❒ The student has difficulty with unfamiliar tasks that require the student to plan and execute a sequence of steps.

7. Academic, Cognitive, or Motor Skills Deficits


❒❒ 7a: Difficult work causes emotional distress due to academic frustration.
❒❒ 7b: The student has difficulty attempting unfamiliar tasks that require using fine motor skills.
❒❒ 7c: The student has difficulty attempting unfamiliar tasks that require using gross motor skills.

8. Restricted Range of Interests


❒❒ Unfamiliar or difficult tasks are often not associated with the student’s interests, which may cause avoidance
behaviors due to the student’s restricted range of interests.
