Q1. How did the attitude of the British change
towards the people of the subcontinent after
1857?
Ans.After 1857, the British realized their mistakes
and started making some administrative, social,
economic and educational reforms in
subcontinent. They established schools and
colleges, made roads established irrigation system
and railways and also appointed Indians for
government jobs.
Q2. What decision dis the British government take
after 1857? Why do they did so?
Ans.After 1857, the British government decided to
take over the rule of Indian and ended the powers
of East India company. As India was too large to
be controlled by East India company. They
appointed first viceroy in India who was known as
a Governor General of sub-continent as well as
representative of British Government in
subcontinent.

Q3. Do you think the local people were satisfied


with the British reform?
Ans.British made reforms for Indians but their
reforms had mixed type of reaction from Indians.
Some people especially Hindus welcomed the
changes and adopted them. Muslims and Sihks
did not like the reforms initially, but later they
also enjoyed the reforms.
Q4. List some major reform of each of the
viceroys named here.
Ans.Some major reforms made by some of the
viceroys of India are as follows:

Lord Canning (1858-1869):


He did not seek revenge of the people responsible
for uprisings and tried to establish better relations
with Indians.

He made some financial and educational reforms.
iii: Lord lython (1876-1880):
He improved the roads, railways and the irrigation
and taxation system in Sub-continent.

He set up the Indian National Congress in 1885.
