Computer and Society – Practical Activity 1

1 – Both ACM (https://www.acm.org/code-of-ethics) and IEEE

(https://www.ieee.org/content/dam/ieee-org/ieee/web/org/about/corporate/ieee-code-of-ethics.pdf)
created a code of ethics and professional conducts for computer scientists. Read them and compare
their characteristics. Can you identify divergences between them? What are their similarities? What
do you consider most relevant in each of them?

2 – Choose one of the following scenarios and apply the process to support the ethical analysis we
studied in our classes.

* Scenario 1
In the past, people used to manage their income in cash. However, in the last decade, we saw a
decrease in the use of cash, and nowadays, people use their bank accounts to receive and manipulate
money most of the time.

The bank agencies are expected to charge their users for using bank services. However, what if an
employer decides to pay the employees using an inherently charged mechanism? For example,
suppose an employer chooses to pay the employees using the PIX protocol, and all the bank
agencies apply charges of 1% for payments received using this mechanism. Are the employees
being treated improperly? What happens if the employer keeps this payment method?

*Scenario 2

Modern televisions have become interactive, and it is expected to see kids using the remote control
to watch their movies and series. What if the television manufacturers start collecting information
from kids about your family? Are they allowed to do this? For example, is it allowed for a game
designed for kids to collect information concerning the family's routine and habits? What about
collecting information about the kids (their favorite food, music, etc.)?

3 – Read the article “AI Ethics: An Empirical Study on the Views of Practitioners and Lawmakers”
and point out:
• The motivation of the article and the problem they try to solve;
• The goal;
• The methodology;
• The key results;
• The limitations of the research;
• The next steps the authors are intended to do.
