JAM GADANG
Indonesia consists of many islands and one of them is the island of Sumatra. And our tourist
attraction today is a building located in West Sumatra precisely in Bukit Tinggi. This building
is very iconic many people visit BukitTinggi to see this building and take photos with family,
friends, and couples. This iconic building is called “Jam Gadang” or which translates to "Big
Clock" in English.
It was built in 1926 by the Dutch during their colonial rule. The tower served as a gift from
the Queen of Holland to the city. Jam Gadang is a stunning example of a blend of Indonesian
and European architecture with its roof resembling a traditional Rumah Gadang (traditional
house of the Minangkabau people). Jam Gadang is located at the top of Bukit Kandang
Kabau, downtown Bukittinggi, and is a characteristic of the city. Jam Gadang stands 26
meters high. The surrounding square often hosts events, celebrations, and cultural
performances, adding to the lively spirit of the area. Lastly in the surrounding area, with the
lush greenery of West Sumatra, the bustling city below, and the distant mountains, create a
beautiful landscape that captures the essence of the region.
in conclusion, Jam Gadang stands not only as a timeless timepiece but also as a symbol of
cultural heritage and community identity. Its architectural beauty, historical significance, and
central location make it a captivating destination for anyone seeking to explore the heart of
West Sumatra.
