Innovative peer-tutoring resources were also devised by various Hwa Chong Service-Learning groups to continue
assisting their beneficiaries during the Circuit Breaker, when face-to-face tutoring was suspended. Project Love of
Learning moved from peer tutoring to making educational science videos with voice-overs for their young charges.
Another group of Hwa Chong students across High School and College served as volunteers in an e-reading programme
to engage needy and low-progress learners from Corporation Primary School during the May holidays. Another group
of Secondary 4 students partnered with the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC) to help senior citizens
make better use of technology through a weekly video series – “Tech & Pandemic”. The Students’ National Education
Council (SNEC) organised #hcappreciate, which started with writing appreciation notes for healthcare workers across
four hospitals. It also collaborated with the HCJC alumni to pack donations of hand sanitiser for frontline workers.
Another group of college students embarked on a project in collaboration with Lions Befrienders to raise funds for 500
senior citizens staying alone in rental flats to acquire mobile phones and SIM cards, so as to keep them contactable
and supported during the Circuit Breaker. The student group also wrote an instruction booklet, so staff members
could teach the elderly how to use these phones. Another group of students directed their efforts within the school
community, rallying their peers to provide support and explanations to canteen vendors on the various government
assistance schemes available for them to tide through this difficult period. Upon the gradual resumption of the school
term, they also encouraged their school mates to patronise the canteen vendors, rather than food delivery services.

We are Yoke Yong and Tianqi, the student editors of Yearbook 2020. Each year, the Yearbook offers a view to our kaleidoscopic
highlights, capturing the moments that define the experiences in Hwa Chong.
2020 saw a myriad of unprecedented challenges brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic, which transformed the way we
experienced school life. From disrupted CCA plans to the eventual transition to Home-Based Learning (HBL), the school
life we were familiar with was forced to come to a halt, as our country and the world were confronted by the effects of
the virus. As with any major change, this ‘new normal’ was not easy to get accustomed to. Like never before, we had to
grapple with the loneliness of being isolated from our peers and teachers, while trying to adapt to learning online. Yet,
in documenting the stories of the year, we found many instances where students and staff did not falter in the face of
such obstacles, and instead found other ways to thrive. From CCAs transitioning to online meetups to teachers finding
innovative ways to interact with students in a physically-isolated world, we saw the school community come together to
turn the bleak circumstances we were given into a hopeful narrative.
(from left to right) Despite these unexpected hurdles, let us not forget about the joys and successes from Hwa Chong’s 100th Anniversary
celebrations. This commemoration culminated in the launch of the Kuo Chuan Centennial Art Gallery. We were excited

Indeed, 2020 was a tumultuous year filled with both highs and lows. Nonetheless, one thing stands as a constant: the Hwa
Chong spirit, which allows us to emerge from adversity and unite in our successes. As editors, we are honoured to be able
to capture these moments, and we hope that in flipping through these pages, you will see past these uncertain times to
find hope in the tenacity and unity displayed by our school community. To our alumni, we hope that the stories featured in
Yearbook 2020 will bring you a sense of pride in being a part of this large family. May you have a pleasant read.
Yours faithfully,

It has been a year since Hwa Chong saw Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong initiate the Kuo Chuan Centennial Art Gallery
(KCCAG) Project on its 100th Founders’ Day. On the 101st anniversary of the Institution’s founding, the school was proud to
unveil the fruits of this ground-breaking project – showcasing its rich heritage and artistic gifts. It was an apt conclusion
for an extraordinary year of centennial celebrations, while also starting a new chapter for HCI.
The event was graced by President Halimah Yacob, who signed the ceremonial plaque, marking the official opening of the
KCCAG. Touring the gallery, she remarked on the quality of the art pieces, as she was given detailed information on the
history and special qualities of each painting by our AEP student docents.
A walk in the KCCAG lets one be enthralled by the works of pioneer artists and former Hwa Chong teachers like Liu Kang
(刘抗), Cheong Soo Pieng (钟泗滨), Chen Wen Hsi (陈文希) and Chen Chong Swee (陈宗瑞). During the Opening Ceremony,
works of our alumnus, the popular local illustrator Lee Kow Fong (Ah-Guo, 阿果), were also showcased, as well as those
of our Art Elective Programme’s (AEP) students. Both past and present represent our contribution to Singapore’s artistic
heritage and cultural assets.
The “Nanyang-style” art featured in the Gallery is unique to Singapore and originated from Hwa Chong’s pioneer artists.
“The (artworks) are enterprising and experimental,” expressed Mr Jonathan Lee, Chairman, Board of Directors of Hwa
Chong Institution. “They were part of the early human capital contributing to the cultural capital that we are only too happy
to inherit.”
The very architecture that houses the art pieces also bears significant historical value. The building, Kuo Chuan Guan
(国专馆), was vital in the nurturing of generations of aspiring artists. It was used to conduct art lessons in the past and
now, it preserves the rich heritage and culture of our school as a museum and gallery.
The sight of our AEP graduates standing beside the works of their predecessors is a perfect cohesion of the past and

Another novel hurdle that the HC-GDYLC team had to overcome was the timezone differences among participating
countries. To do so, the delegates were divided into three blocs, which met at different times of the day. As a result, some
of Hwa Chong’s own facilitators had to stay up after midnight to facilitate discussions. Yet, this opened opportunities for
unique memories to be forged, as facilitators bonded with delegates across timezones.
Despite the challenges, the event managed to leave an indelible impact on its participants.
Reflecting on her Convention experiences, Cora Elisabeth Macmillan, from Dominion High School in the US, remarks, “How

In response to the changing global landscape brought about by the COVID-19 outbreak, the Gamemaster-Organisers
started the first ever Hwa Chong Global Digital Young Leaders’ Convention (HC-GDYLC) by imagining an alternate reality.
From 18th to 21st July 2020, HC-GDYLC virtually brought together 101 young leaders from 17 schools across 7 countries

Chartering its own course, HC-GDYLC broke from the structures of traditional conferences by presenting something
completely different – in the form of an alternate reality game. Each delegate played a stakeholder with unique goals (20S7B) concludes, reflecting on the overall success

Jointly organized by Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU, Singapore) the 2020
International Science Youth Forum (ISYF 2020) now into its 12th year welcomed 5 distinguished scientists comprising 3
Nobel Laureates, 1 Fields Medallist and 1 Millennium Technology Prize winner to engage 120 students from 42 different
schools from across the globe.
Through the Nobel Forum, Master Classes and Dialogue Sessions, participants interacted with these Nobel Laureates
and other eminent scientists on the theme “Evolving Aspiration: Divergent Pathways, Convergent Future”. As part of Mr Pang Choon How, Principal of Hwa Chong Institution, said:
the five-day programme, students visited the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) and Institute of High Performance
Computing (IHPC) and participated in hands-on activities at the research facilities at National University of Singapore
(NUS), and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
“We are excited by the vast possibilities that recent scientific
advancements offer. At the same time, with new possibilities come
new challenges, many of which will push the boundaries of morals
and ethics. To our young delegates, I pose these questions: how do
you envisage our future and how would you like to contribute in
shaping a world that’s filled with hope and possibilities?”
