Additional information for brake testing

Additional Another factor that has a major impact on

brake wear is brake adaptation between vehicle
information for and trailer. The heat generated in the brakes
causes brake lining wear. Thus, evenly
brake testing distributing the force between the vehicle and
the trailer reduces wear on the discs and brake
lining of the road train. Read more about this in
the booklet 10:03-05 Brake adaptation using
roller brake tester for drum brakes.
General
Supplementary information for brake testing is
presented below. The information applies to P,
G and R series trucks as well as K, N and F
series buses. See also booklet 10:03-03 Using a
roller brake tester for brakes.

Note: Before the roller brake test can be

started, the function Wheel speed difference
permitted must be activated. This is done by
holding the TC switch pressed for more than
5 seconds without the brake pedal being
pressed. This function also deactivates the bus
stop brake and automatic hill hold. To return to
normal mode, give a short press on the TC
switch.

There are 2 main reasons for performing a

brake test.
• To ensure that official requirements are
met in accordance with the regulations of
the country in question. Such requirements
generally relate to safety and regard
vehicle performance as regards maximum
retardation, lateral pull and brake
adaptation between vehicle and trailer.
• To ensure the best possible operating
economy. At present, the brake system is
the system that generates the highest repair
and maintenance costs for the vehicle.
Most brake applications occur at low brake
pressure. To reduce maintenance and
repair costs, it is therefore important to also
examine braking performance at low
pressure.

Reference braking forces

Reference braking forces

The most common procedure for the roller
brake tester is the adaptation method that uses
the start pressure to calculate the extrapolated
braking force. The start pressure may be
difficult to determine and may differ from
measurement to measurement. This leads to
variations in the test results and it may be
necessary to test the vehicle several times.
Another adaptation method is the method that
uses the reference braking force. Reference
braking forces are provided by the vehicle
manufacturer and indicate the minimum
braking force that each axle must achieve in
order for the vehicle to comply with retardation
requirements set by the authorities. Refer to the
chapter "Brake data tables" for reference
braking values.
The advantage of using reference braking
forces is that no special arrangements are
required when testing vehicles equipped with
an electronic brake system. Reference braking
forces are not dependent on the manufacturer
or the extrapolation algorithm used in the roller
brake tester. The roller brake tester algorithms
differ from country to country. Thus a vehicle
that passes inspection at the national motor
vehicle inspection centre of one country may
fail inspection at the inspection centre in
another country.
The test results are stable and do not vary
between tests. In addition, the test results in
different countries have been equated.
However, there are still test result variations
due to roller brake tester calibration and
external factors, such as the alignment of the
vehicle over the rollers.

Extrapolated braking force

Extrapolated braking Guaranteed pressure

level of pressure in the brake chambers during

the requirements of the authorities. If the
vehicle is unladen, the wheels may lock during
braking. It is therefore common for braking Guaranteed pressure
force to be extrapolated to the guaranteed
pressure in the brake chambers. Series Guaranteed

Retardation check

Retardation check

Check retardation on
vehicles with EBS
Recommended check to ensure that vehicles
equipped with EBS comply with authorities'
requirements regarding retardation and brake
corridors.
If the points below are fulfilled, a vehicle with
EBS lies within the brake corridor.
1 Check to ensure there are no activated
warnings or fault codes for the EBS system.
2 Check that all axles have reached the
guaranteed pressure when the vehicle is
stationary and the brake pedal is depressed.
3 Check the braking force on the roller brake
tester using the reference braking forces.
In addition, factors such as uneven braking,
pulsating brake, rolling resistance, start pressure
and hysteresis or binding are also checked.
It is not possible to check the brake adaptation
between vehicle and trailer/semi-trailer on
vehicles equipped with EBS5. On these vehicles,
adaptation is automatic during driving. If the
vehicle meets the requirements for retardation at
guaranteed pressure in the trailer connection, the
electronic brake system will automatically ensure
optimal adaptation between the vehicles. The
requirements for retardation are specified by the
authorities and is represented by the brake
corridor which consists of an upper and a lower
limit for approved retardation.
Vehicles equipped with the ABS E brake system
can be tested by measuring the pressure in the
trailer coupling following the normal procedure.

Brake data tables

Brake data tables

Restrictions
The reference braking values were calculated
with Scania genuine parts in the brakes. The
braking force and brake service life will
definitely be reduced if other brands are used.

Instructions for using the

tables
• First select the type of vehicle. Tables and
diagrams for trucks can be found in
chapters 2, 4 and 5. Tables and diagrams
for buses can be found in chapters 3 and 6.
• Select the tyre group and retardation value
(z) to be used. The tyre group can be found
in the tables below.
• Find the right table by reading the cell at
the top left of the table.
• Find the right brake type in the left column
and then find the braking force to be used.
The overlap between these 2 shows the
minimum permitted braking force value
per axle.
One of the brake types in the tables is named
Drum 16"/130, where "/130" is the length of
the brake slack adjuster, which is 130 mm. The
brake slack adjusters of all other brakes are the
same length (165 mm).
